The first Interactive Robots & Media Lab in the Middle East The Interactive Robots and Media Laboratory of the College of IT, of the United Arab Emirates University, was founded in September 2007 by Dr. Nikolaos Mavridis. The United Arab Emirates University is the oldest, largest, and most prestigious university of the Emirates, which has been ranked second in the Arab World in terms of research output. IRML is located in the main UAEU campus, which is in Al Ain - a beautiful oasis resort city just an hour away from either Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Dr. Nikolaos Mavridis, the founder and director of the lab, was awarded his PhD from the famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, where he created a robot that could see objects and faces, speak with humans about them, and manipulate them – having abilities similar to those required for passing a test for three-year old children. The lab currently has five faculty members affiliated with it, and more than 30 students have taken part in its projects so far - including interns from others institutes, in the UAE as well as internationally.
