Micro-Structuring of Glass

The picosecond laser CEPHEUS can be used to create microstructures on different materials, e. g. on glass. The surface can be processed on very small scales, creating structures that are needed for high-end applications. The crucial factor for the quality of such microstructures is their creation with an ultrashort pulse laser, which is done without any thermal effects in the material.

One field of application for these structures are microfluidic devices. The are for instance used as lab-on-a-chip devices for different processes such as transport, mixing or separation of fluids. They can also be used as reaction vessels.

The structures needed for microfluidic processes usually consist of wells and paths, with dimensions typically ranging around 100 microns of width.
