  • RENEWABLE INTERCONNECTIVITY SOLUTIONS

  • Renewable sources of energy will play a significant role in the future of power. Wind and solar installations continue to increase as utilities and power providers are looking for more sustainable, abundant and cleaner sources of energy.

However, the intermittent nature of wind and solar can create voltage stability problems between the transmission system and the provider. In response, utilities and regulators are increasingly imposing strict grid interconnection requirements. Renewable energy producers must condition the power in order to interconnect with the power grid and not interfere with the grid’s overall performance.

Our Renewable Interconnectivity Solutions enable wind and solar energy generation systems to meet these emerging requirements. We understand our customers’ needs and take a customized approach that results in a cost-effective solution. Our solutions enhance the ability of renewable energy power plants to stay online and help prevent the nuisance tripping of solar inverters and wind turbine generators. In turn, this helps maximize the power plant’s output, which leads to increased revenues. Our offerings include:
    • D-VAR® Systems

    • Ideal for meeting grid interconnection standards

Located at the wind or solar plant substation, our D-VAR system cost effectively provides the critical dynamic reactive compensation essential to connect renewable power plants to the grid effectively and in compliance with even the most stringent interconnection requirements.
    • DVAR-RT™ Systems

    • In-turbine solution to improve ride-through ability

Located inside individual turbine towers, our patent-pending DVAR-RT system can be easily and cost effectively added to new turbines or retrofitted to existing turbines. It enables individual wind turbines to continue operating smoothly by dramatically improving the ability of the turbines to ride through power grid voltage disturbances that might otherwise interrupt operation.
    • Wind-RT™ Systems

    • Simplest and most cost effective LVRT retrofit option
Developed specifically to meet China’s grid codes, the Wind-RT retrofit system detects voltage dips on the power system and quickly (within 20 ms) isolates the turbine from the power grid. It then acts to precisely absorb the power generated by the wind turbine to maintain constant turbine speed and torque while providing reactive power to keep the turbine magnetized and at a constant voltage. Once the voltage recovers, the turbine is smoothly reconnected to the power grid, resulting in dramatically improved LVRT and more power generation.

    • FAULT CURRENT LIMITERS

    • Stand-Alone Fault Current Limiters
As electrical demand increases, more power generation must be added to the grid. Along with this growth in power generation comes increasing fault current levels. These power surges can be caused by equipment failures, severe weather, accidents or even acts of willful destruction. Such faults can damage major, expensive components and, if not cleared quickly, can lead to lengthy and costly outages.

Used in a substation, fault current limiters (FCLs) act as surge protectors for the power grid. These smart grid systems can help protect the grid by reducing the destructive nature of faults, extending the life of existing substation equipment and allowing utilities to defer or eliminate equipment replacements or upgrades.

      Fault Current Limiting Cables

Fault current limiting technology can also be embedded within power cable systems. An FCL cable can be used to connect existing substations, enabling power sharing between regions. This is a compelling proposition for utilities in that it ensures system redundancy for critical urban infrastructure, increases system reliability and mitigates power disruptions caused by environmental or human factors. We have successfully completed qualification tests at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the U.S. for this proprietary technology.

We have collaborated with industry leaders such as Nexans and Siemens to successfully develop and demonstrate FCL technology. Additionally, our Amperium™ superconductor wire can be tailored specifically for fault current limiting applications.

Fault Current Limiters: Resilient, Reliable, Secure.
    • POWER QUALITY SOLUTIONS

    • Every year, billions of dollars in revenue are lost due to momentary power quality problems. The slightest variations in voltage can cause hours of downtime, resulting in lost productivity and the need to recalibrate equipment.

Twenty-first century industrial companies are embracing automation, miniaturization and computer-controlled manufacturing processes to boost their productivity and be more competitive. However, advanced systems can be highly sensitive to even the briefest variations in electrical power quality. When this declines for even a few milliseconds, computer-driven devices can fail on several levels. Adjustable speed drives can stop, fuses can blow, lights can blink, motors can slow down and PLCs and other process control equipment can drop out – compromising your operations.

Our Power Quality Solutions cost effectively provide efficiency, protection and secure connection, helping industrial facilities achieve smooth operation and realize their full profit potential. We offer modular, cost-effective power quality solutions for a variety of industrial applications.

We routinely solve problems caused by starting up large motors, metal shredders and crushers; or operating sawmills, pump or pipeline stations, shipyards, coal mines, feed plants or similar processes.

  • 10.0 MW SeaTitan™ Wind Turbine

  • Providing a path to significantly lower the cost of offshore wind power, AMSC is developing the SeaTitan wind turbine to maximize “power per tower.” With the ability to produce 10 MW of power or more, the SeaTitan model promises to be the world’s most powerful turbine. It is based on a lighter weight and highly reliable direct drive design, ensuring a perfect fit for the harsh offshore operational conditions.

Superconductor generator eliminates tolerance and deformation issues
The SeaTitan wind turbine design employs a high temperature superconductor (HTS) generator, which is significantly smaller and lighter than a generator using conventional technologies. The superconductor generator has a large air gap to eliminate issues with tolerance, deformation and rare earth material availability. The generator is integrated as part of the turbine and decoupled from the loadcarrying components. Generator torque is transferred directly from the stator to the mainframe.

Amperium™ wire is key to low cost and light weight
AMSC’s Amperium wire is used for the HTS rotors instead of copper wire. These wires can carry over 100 times more power than copper wires of the same dimensions. Therefore, the generator is much smaller, lighter and more efficient than conventional large-scale wind turbine generators and produces the highest known power-to-weight ratio. This reduces the costs associated with the supporting mast structure, foundations, floatation systems and installation.

    Direct drive lowers maintenance need
The direct drive model does not use a gearbox, which is one of the most maintenance-intensive wind turbine components and extremely costly with breakdowns at sea. In addition, no couplings are needed with the direct drive.

    High efficiency for offshore generation
The SeaTitan turbine connects the superconductor generator to the grid with a full-scale converter. The IGBT-based converter with advanced power electronics ensures that the generator works with high efficiency over the entire speed range.

The SeaTitan turbine uses an advanced electrical individual pitch control system design. It is available in 50 Hz or 60 Hz.

    Compliance with global grid codes
The SeaTitan turbine fulfills the most demanding international grid code requirements and has low voltage ridethrough (LVRT) capability.

Real-time information with continuous monitoring and alarm handling
AMSC’s advanced wtCMS™ condition monitoring system provides continuous monitoring of the key system components. This gives operators real-time information about the turbine status as well as detailed and comprehensive analysis tools to optimize maintenance activities.
