Spectra-Physics

Company Profile

Founded in 1961 as the first commercial laser company, Spectra-Physics is today a recognized industry leader in semiconductor-based laser and optical technologies and one of the largest manufacturers of lasers and laser optics worldwide. The company sources more than 95 percent of its net sales from six strategic markets. The newest and fastest growing market for Spectra-Physics products is telecommunications, while the core markets are computer and microelectronics manufacturing, industrial manufacturing, image recording, medical, and research. The telecommunications opportunity for Spectra-Physics focuses on the build-out of fiber optic networks and the resulting demand for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and optical add drop multiplexing (OADM) devices. In 1999 and 2000, the company developed and marketed new product lines, expanded its manufacturing capacity and reorganized its business units to address the passive and active components segments of the telecommunications market. In the passive segment, Spectra-Physics is now shipping the Zeroshift' line of 200-GHz and 100-GHz optical thin film filters, as well as lithium niobate components, in commercial volumes. The company is also shipping prototype volumes of etalons for optical wavelength accuracy and stability. In the active segment, the company is shipping multi-mode pump lasers and Raman fiber lasers for the development and testing of next-generation, high-power amplifiers and other DWDM system components. Spectra-Physics brings to this opportunity more than 17 years of experience in semiconductor-based lasers and more than 40 years in high-power thin film optical coatings for laser applications. In its core markets, the company provides a wide range of semiconductor-based lasers for applications ranging from semiconductor manufacturing and industrial materials processing to commercial printing, medical diagnostics and treatment, and scientific research. Spectra-Physics'operations are vertically integrated to support in-house design and fabrication of all strategic components from semiconductor wafers to complete end-user systems. The company's manufacturing operations are based in Mountain View and Oroville, California; Tucson, Arizona; and Stahnsdorf, Germany. Its comprehensive product line is backed by a sales, service and support organization located in six countries, with the remainder of the world covered by more than 30 international distributors. Spectra-Physics' direct sales offices are in North America, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
