Since servohydraulic machines are proving themselves more and more on the market, a new cooling design for motors is also making headway: oil cooling. Thus, the specialist for automation and drive systems, Baumüller, headquartered in Nuremberg, includes the DS2 motor series in sizes 100-200, now with oil cooling, in its range of products. This further development is also planned for the DST2 and DSD2 series.

In particular in machines in which oil is already available, for instance due to the use of hydraulics or servohydraulics or for other reasons, this innovation can provide advantages on the market. Since the oil is already available in such applications, it can be directly utilized for cooling purposes without generating additional costs.

Oil cooling offers clear advantages in comparison to surface cooling with a fan with regards to cooling power and thus also with regards to the performance yield of the motor. In addition, this cooling method, like all liquid cooling methods, has the pleasant side effect of very good noise insulation. Oil cooling can be a sensible alternative with significant benefits in places where the water quality is poor or there is low water availability or obtaining water is connected with significant additional costs. These benefits include positive economic effects and technical advanages. The oil system in hydraulic machines, which is used to cool the drive technology, consists of a completely closed circuit, by design, which prevents dirt from getting in. The cooling system is also completely encased, by design, which makes oil cooling a very robust option.
