CERATIZIT is introducing carbide rolls and segments for adding annular profiles to nails and screws. These tools are made out of a specially developed carbide that is tough, wear-resistant and capable of withstanding the extremely high pressures involved.

When mass-producing screw nails and ring nails, manufacturers use planetary dies consisting of a roll and segments that are mounted in a thread-rolling machine. This cold-forming process uses pressing and rolling to produce the thread: the metal shank rotates on its own axis between the roll and the segment, which jointly carry the profile. The process generates an enormous amount of pressure within the tools, thereby imprinting the profile from the roll and the segment onto the nail itself.

CERATIZIT manufactures the rolls and segments required for this process out of carbide, the advantage being that carbide withstands the massive pressures better than any other material. The carbide grades used here were specially developed for this metal-working technology and combine exceptional wear resistance with extreme toughness, resulting in tools with a very long tool life. During the cold-forming process, both the roll and the segments wear down at the same rate – so both components have the same tool life, allowing users to replace both at the same time. Furthermore, the profile of the segment and the roll are perfectly matched, which results in consistently high-quality nails, even when producing up to 2,500 nails per minute.

CERATIZIT currently offers annular groove rolls for ring shank nails. Rolls for spiral nails and screws will become available later in 2014.
