DIAS Infrared’s new PYROVIEW 480N portable infrared camera optimised for metal forming and steel mills applications

The portable infrared camera PYROVIEW 480N made by DIAS Infrared is used especially in metal forming and steel mills because process temperatures can be determined and monitored quickly and safely. This device was specially developed for this area of application with the proviso to avoid possible incorrect measurements.

Detection of 172800 measuring points

In general, measurements with a handheld infrared camera are more accurate and more independent of the person measuring than the measurements with handheld pyrometers used in many cases. This becomes clear when we consider the measuring principle of both in detail. A pyrometer always measures an integral in a mostly circular measuring field (measuring spot), whereby the spot size depends on the measuring distance. In practice, this means that the employee must aim for the target at the correct distance and in the right place and should not move the pyrometer during the measurement. This is not always easy, so that often different people also determine different measurement results on the same object. This subjective factor is not relevant for the thermal imager PYROVIEW 480N, because in a short time (frame rate 25 Hz, response time 80 ms) 480 pixel x 360 pixel = 172800 measuring points are recorded simultaneously. These are so small that, for example, when the maximum value picker is activated, internal image processing can always automatically determine the hottest point on the measurement object, regardless of the specific orientation of the camera. The only necessary action is the manual focusing of the optics. Due to the large depth of field and the application in the high temperature range (from 600 °C), the distance is usually so large that all objects can be detected with the optical setting “infinite“. Thus, no adjustments on site are necessary and users can simply align the camera roughly on the target object and do the measurements.

Lots of advantages

The device can store individual images as well as entire movies in the internal memory. This allows dynamic processes or fast processes to be analyzed very well. It can hold about 10000 images in the built-in memory. These are easily read out via a LAN connection and analyzed on the PC (Windows) with the supplied infrared image evaluation software PYROSOFT Compact or Professional. Therefore, periodically determined plant states can also be compared and documented very well. In addition, all measurements can be post processed on the PC.

The in-built high-dynamic Si image sensor operating at short wavelengths of 0.8 μm to 1.1 μm allows a continuous measurement range of 600 °C to 1500 °C or optionally of 1400 °C to 3000 °C. The short wavelengths operation drastically minimizes the temperature measurement errors due to possible emissivity misadjustments compared with infrared cameras in the standard spectral range of 8 μm to 14 μm.
