Eaton’s new Smart Dimmer offers universal dimming solution for all types of common lamps

Power management company Eaton has introduced a revolutionary new dimming solution that works with all types of lamp in common use. This includes incandescent bulbs, halogen bulbs, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and dimmable LED lamps. The Eaton Smart Dimmer is even suitable for use with low-power LED lamps that, until now, have been almost impossible to dim effectively and reliably.

A particular attractive option for electrical contractors, who can now meet all of their dimming requirements with just one range of products, the new Smart Dimmers are compact, easy to install. They also offer a choice of six built-in dimming profiles which work straight out the box in all standard applications. To meet special requirements, custom dimming profiles can also be defined easily and quickly.

Eaton Smart Dimmers provide smooth dimming, without flickering or flashing. They generate no audible noise and, even when they are used with the smallest LED lamps, there is no residual glow if the light is switched off. They provide smooth control over the maximum possible brightness range and, as an added bonus, they are built on energy efficient technology.

One big drawback, however, is that currently different types of dimmable LED lamps all have their own dimming characteristics. Some types of lamp are, in fact, described as being almost unsuitable for dimming, while others could, in the past, only be controlled with a specific type of dimmer. This is a big benefit not just for installers, but also for home owners who now have full control over the lighting in all of their rooms, irrespective of the type of lamps and luminaires they choose to use. Smart Dimmers are easy to install with any standard push switch of any brand, which ensures a smart appearance.”

Once a dimmer has been installed, it can easily be operated using one or more wireless switches placed in any location. With the setup only taking a few clicks, a group of Smart Dimmers can be controlled with just one push button or one Smart Dimmer controlled with multiple switches. It is easy, for example, to arrange to switch off all lights in a home with only one push on a button. To provide additional smart functionality, Eaton’s dimmers are compatible with the company’s xComfort wireless system for building automation.

Eaton Smart Dimmers are available in flush-mounted versions that are only 18 mm deep and are rated at 250 W, and in built-in versions with ratings of 250 W and 500 W. All types have built-in automatic-reset protection against short circuits, overloads and over temperature.
