Visualizing Warehouse Planning with Virtual Reality

Actively including customers is particularly important when planning and designing complex, in-company warehousing and material flow concepts. For this aim, the logistics partners of Ehrhardt + Partner Consulting (EPC) use virtual reality software. In addition, visualization with virtual reality hardware qualifies a comprehensive insight into the conceptual design and a fast adaptation of the planning with customer involvement.

Using the virtual reality software, the subsidiary of the Ehrhardt + Partner Group represents three-dimensional intralogistic material flow concepts. Contrary to conventional CAD layouts, this leads to a serious improvement of the process understanding and customer communication. The visualization can be enriched with real material flow data, thus exposing bottlenecks in transport routes, for example.

“With virtual reality planning, we actively support the decision making process of our customers,” Marcel Wilhelms, Managing Director of Ehrhardt + Partner Consulting, says. “In case of any desired changes, for example, we adapt the concept immediately, which paves the way for acceptance and creates trust. Especially in the case of complex projects, visualization and simulation are a decisive advantage that further increases the customer’s planning security.”

From visualization to 3D model

The solution can be presented easily and understandably in a result-oriented manner using Oculus Rift, Google Cardboard or similar virtual reality hardware. The EPC virtual reality visualizations can also be used for secondary processes: The models can be sent easily by e-mail and displayed on the computer or using mobile terminal devices, such as smartphones or tablets. The model can also be output using a 3D printer.

The logistics consulting service of Ehrhardt + Partner Consulting offers neutral, manufacture-independent planning and advice. Location analysis, conceptual design and the implementation of complex logistics systems are the specialized area of EPC.
