Within its strategy to focus on reference design activity, Epson announces the possibility to use the S5U13781R01C100 TFT Controller shield board with mbedTM compatible platforms. mbedTM is a well-known software platform for ARM® based microcontroller, providing tools and developer ecosystem to create standards-based solutions for any kind of application, with particular focus on the Industrial application.

In August 2015 Epson has already released the S5U13781R01C100 TFT controller shield board which now can be used with mbedTM compatible platforms. The shield board includes the S1D13781, one of the Epson LCD controllers, which can control displays with resolution up to WQVGA (480×272) at 24bpp, and 800×480 at 8bpp. The S1D13781 provides incredible hardware graphics acceleration enhancing the perception of users HMI systems.

Features integrated in the S1D13781 are for example alpha blending, transparency, picture rotation (90o / 180o / 270o), digital gamma correction and multi windows (picture in picture). The S1D13781 includes 384kB of memory which can be freely split between the main picture and up to two “picture in picture” windows which can be independently rotated.

The Epson shield board includes two connectors for WQVGA (480×272) and QVGA (320×240) panel types. In order to utilize the shield board in typical mbedTM microcontroller board, some small modifications are required. Epson provides a guide for the modifications which are listed in the document available on the website. The S5U13781R01C100 board has been successfully tested with the ST Microelectronics Nucleo F303RE, F401RE and F411RE boards.

Epson provides a “step-by-step” user´s guide enabling the introduction of the Epson Graphics Library into the common mbedTM environment.
