BIEMH 2014 is an opportunity to see many of the latest developments from US machine tool builder, Haas Automation, including: the all-new, Haas UMC-750 Universal Machining Centre, designed for cost-effective, reliable 3+2 and simultaneous 5-axis machining; the Haas ST range of CNC turning centres; the DT-1 CNC Drill Tap machine; the VM-6 Mould Maker milling machine; and the EC-400 CNC horizontal machining centre.

Haas UMC-750 Universal Machining Centre

Flexible, 5-axis machining offers reduced set-up times and increased accuracy for multi-side and complex parts. The new Haas UMC offers all of these at an affordable price and with Haas Automation simplicity and peace-of-mind as standard.

The Haas UMC-750 offers travels of 762mm x 508mm x 508mm and an integrated dual-axis trunnion table. The machine is equipped with an inline direct-drive, low-heat 40-taper spindle (8100 standard, or optional 12,000 rpm), and comes standard with a 40+1 tool side-mount tool changer. The trunnion can position parts to nearly any angle for 5-sided (3+2) machining, or provide simultaneous 5-axis motion for contouring and complex machining. The machine provides +35 and -110 degrees of tilt and 360 degrees of rotation for excellent tool clearance and large part capacity.

New 15,000rpm DT-1

For 2014, Haas Automation has boosted the spindle speed of its very successful DT-1 Drill/Tap center from 12,000 rpm to 15,000 rpm, giving customers the ability to run higher feedrates for small tools and high-speed machining operations.

The DT-1 is a compact, high-speed drill and tap machine with full milling capabilities. The machine features a generous 508mm x 406mm x 394mm work cube and 660mm x 381mm T-slot table, while maintaining a very small footprint. The powerful BT-30 taper spindle now spins to 15,000 rpm, and allows rigid tapping to 5000 rpm, with up to four times retract speed. The spindle is coupled directly to the motor for smooth, quiet operation and extreme thermal stability. An 11.2kW vector drive system provides 62Nm (peak) of cutting torque for milling and boring operations.

The DT-1 provides cutting feedrates to 30.5m/min for high-speed milling, and the machine’s 20+1 side-mount tool changer swaps tools quickly to reduce non-cutting time. High-speed 61m/min rapids combine with high acceleration rates to shorten cycle times and increase throughput.

VM mould making machines

Haas Automation’s high-performance VM machines provide the accuracy, rigidity and thermal stability required for high-precision mould work. Available in three frame sizes (VM-2, VM-3, VM-6), each VM-Series machine features a 12,000-rpm spindle driven by a 22.4 kW vector dual-drive system, a 24-pocket side-mount tool changer, a high-speed control with full look-ahead and a unique, multi-fixturing table.

New generation Haas ST CNC turning centres

The New Generation Haas turning centers were designed from the ground up to be extremely rigid, highly accurate, and very thermally stable. All castings were optimized using finite element analysis (FEA) to produce the most rigid designs, while improving chip and coolant flow, and simplifying maintenance and service. All Haas ST lathes come with double anchored ball-screws, brushless servomotors and many productivity-enhancing features usually found only on much more expensive machine tools.

The Haas ST-30 on show at BIEMH 2014 is a heavy duty, precision lathe with a 254mm chuck 533 x 660 mm max capacity, 76 mm bar, 806 mm swing, a 22.4 kW vector drive providing 3400 rpm, and a 12-station tool turret. Like all of the new Haas ST lathes, the ST-30 provides excellent value for money and reliability usually only found in much more expensive machines.

EC-400 Horizontal machining centre

The Haas EC-400 horizontal machining centre has travels of 508 x 508 x 508mm, a 40-taper spindle, and a 400 mm twin-pallet system. The 14.9 kW vector drive, inline direct-drive gives 8000 rpm as standard, and a 24+1 side-mount tool changer enables done-in-one operations.

Two-thousand-and-twelve and 2013 were the years Haas Automation reached pre-economic crisis levels of revenue and production volume. In fact, the company achieved almost $1billion in sales last year and built more than 13,000 CNC machine tools, at its Oxnard, California manufacturing facility.

Gerard Guitart, Sales Director for Haas Factory Outlet Hitec Máquinas CNC (Barcelona & Vittoria): “Our products are designed to offer lower cost of ownership, high productivity and outstanding reliability, meaning companies can invest with confidence knowing they can make parts quickly, efficiently and, most importantly, for a profit. Manufacturing companies here in Spain demand high-productivity and great value for money,” he says. “Gone are the days when a company owner will spend more than necessary to get a job done. Quite rightly, everyone now wants the right tool at the right price and with uncompromised support and backup.”

Haas Automation recently celebrated building and selling its 150,000th CNC machine tool: A DS-30YSS dual spindle turning centre with Y-axis. “Only 7-years ago we celebrated building and supplying our 75,000th machine,” says Haas Automation Europe Managing Director Mr. Alain Reynvoet. “Since then, we have doubled our total output and added many new, high-productivity products to the Haas range.”
