META-Regalbau successfully installed shelving and pallet racking system for Wollschläger

For the new central warehouse, Arnsberg-based META-Regalbau supplied and installed a pallet racking system and a multi-tier shelving system.

At the end of January 2015, Wollschläger GmbH & Co. KG completed the biggest move in its company history within Bochum. The previous location no longer offered sufficient capacity for further growth, meaning that more space was required. For this new 28,000 m² central warehouse, Arnsberg-based META-Regalbau supplied and installed a pallet racking system with wide and narrow-aisle stores as well as a multi-tier shelving system in order to provide structured storage for a total of 50,000 different items.

Wollschläger is a systems supplier for precision tools, welding technology, occupational safety and operating equipment. On average, 7,500 order items leave the new warehouse every day. Thanks to the systematic processes in place, deliveries are made within 24 to 48 hours.

Comprehensive project management

Wollschläger worked together with the Fraunhofer Institute IML in Dortmund to design a neutral rough concept for the new logistics centre. The Bochum-based company then tasked META-Regalbau with setting up the warehouse. Volker Nielsen, Head of Logistics at Wollschläger, co-ordinated the construction, the planning and the shelving. “It was particularly due to the flexibility of META-Regalbau that we managed to get the entire project right on target”, says Volker Nielsen.

Well arranged

The three-tier META QUICK shelving system is 7.5 m high, and with 18,850 shelves it has 80,000 storage positions for stocking small parts. The shelves are rated for a load of 150 kg. “The multi-tier shelving system comprises two large blocks. In between these is a three-tier storage platform through which the conveyor technology runs”, explains Elmar Dolle, regional sales manager at META. The approx. 1,000 m2 all-round storage platform has a foreman’s office integrated into the first upper tier. Five stair towers ensure convenient entry and exit as well as quick escape routes.

The META MULTIPAL pallet racking system is designed to have approx. 11,000 storage positions. To ensure a seamless order-picking process, over 100 transition positions have been installed at the front sides of the narrow-aisle store.

Perfect partner

Wollschläger and META have a long-standing partnership going back around 20 years. This successful collaboration has resulted in positive synergy effects for both Wollschläger and META. With its warehouse, Wollschläger provides a successful reference for the racking technology of its trading partner META, who in turn can guide its customers through the new logistics centre. “Even changes at short notice were no problem for META, which meant that we were able to integrate the conveyor technology into the shelving system without any complications. Being nearby meant that all queries and change requests were handled quickly and personally too”, sums up a satisfied Volker Nielsen.
