The Pascual Vinuesa sawmill, located in the Spanish city of Rubena, has managed to significantly reduce building and auxiliary costs for its new timber warehouse by executing it as a self-supporting structure. The rack construction from OHRA simultaneously functions as a supporting structure for the warehouse’s roof and walls.

OHRA, specialist for rack facilities for the timber and building materials trade based in Kerpen, Germany, not only supplied the racks – it also advised Pascual Vinuesa on the redesign of its warehouse processes. This included the design of the new warehouse as well as the necessary statical calculations and the assembly of the racks. Thanks to the warehouse’s self-supporting design, no additional supporting elements are required in addition to the rack stands. This enabled the building costs to be significantly reduced. However, above all it enabled the racks to be flexibly adjusted to the individual needs of the Spanish company. The wooden roof beams were provided by Pascual Vinuesa – OHRA integrated corresponding retainers into the racks.

The rack facility itself is composed of cantilever racks specially suited to the storage of long goods. The characteristic feature of the OHRA system is the construction of the cantilever arms: They are hung horizontally into the stands, as opposed to being bolted or welded. This allows the suspended arm to remain flexible, deflecting in the event of knocks. This avoids damage to the rack as well as the stored goods. The rack stands are perforated in a 100 mm grid, in which the arms are hung, providing for flexibility. The arms can be adjusted without the use of tools so that the racks can be quickly adapted to changing conditions.

In the version for self-supporting warehouses, the rack construction from OHRA can be extended with a range of optional features: in addition to the roof and walls these include the guttering and access doors for vehicles and personnel. OHRA can also supply travelling cranes or stacker cranes with the corresponding software for semi- or fully-automatic warehouses.
