MTU Onsite Energy Series 4000 generator sets from distributor Detroit Diesel MTU Peru to support the biggest port on South America’s West Coast

Rolls-Royce lately provided three MTU Onsite Energy 20V 4000 generator sets to be installed at the Port of Callao, the chief seaport of Peru that gives commercial and marine access to the city and surrounding areas. The MTU Onsite Energy brand is part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

The Port of Callao is the biggest port on South America’s West Coast and is owned by APM Terminals, a transnational company that manages ports worldwide. The port, which is used as the gateway to Peru, handles containerized and general cargo such as metals, grains, fertilizers, chemicals, coal, vegetable and fish oils and machinery. APM Terminals is at the moment undergoing an extensive modernization to increase the port’s capacity, ability to handle large vessels, and capability to support the growing agriculture sector, which in turn, will help improve Peru’s global competitiveness. JJC General Contractors South America, a local construction company, is handling the port’s modernization project and also managed the generator set installation.

Julio Valeriano, project manager at JJC General Contractors South America, said: “The Port of Callao is being transformed to become the new center of trade and development for Peru and the entire Latin American region. Backup power is essential to keep power running to equipment that is critical to the port’s operation, such as gantry cranes, refrigeration systems and substations. MTU Onsite Energy’s backup power technology was selected over the competition because of its highly-technical characteristics and the experience of its staff and local Peru-based distributor, Detroit Diesel MTU Peru. We are confident that we made the right choice.”

The highly-engineered Series 4000 generator set offers outstanding fuel economy and best-in-class reliability and availability. They deliver a power output of 3,250 kWe through the 20-cylinder configuration of the MTU Series 4000 engine. If power to the seaport is lost, an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) will transfer the electrical load to MTU Onsite Energy’s backup power solution within seconds.

Dante Romero, head of energy at Detroit Diesel MTU Peru said: “Being part of the modernization of Peru’s main seaport speaks to the reputation MTU Onsite Energy products have world-wide. All of our customers in the region are extremely satisfied with these generator sets and facility managers at the Port of Callao will be no different.”

Detroit Diesel MTU Peru is an authorized distributor of MTU Onsite Energy products, providing emergency, standby and auxiliary prime power solutions, as well as local support and service throughout Peru. Detroit Diesel MTU Peru commissioned the project, developed the engineering, delivered and installed the system and performed final performance tests with the systems.
