Following on from the enormous success of the new IMX174/249 Global Shutter CMOS sensors, Sony is introducing yet more new models. The most significant development seen with the 1/1.8″ IMX250 and 2/3″ IMX252 sensors is the reduction in pixel size to 3.45 µm by Sony, which positions them at the forefront of their segment. When used in conjunction with C-Mount lenses, the increased pixel density provides higher resolution images when compared with the IMX174 and IMX249 sensors. Thanks to further decreased image noise levels, the dynamic range remains practically unchanged at levels in excess of 71 dB, resulting in improved image quality with a higher resolution, as well as an increased image refresh rate.

Both sensors will be incorporated into the MATRIX VISION product portfolio and will supplement the mvBlueCOUGAR-XD (Dual-GigE) and mvBlueFOX3-2 (USB3 Vision) camera ranges. While the 3.2 megapixel IMX252 will initially be available as the mvBlueCOUGAR-XD104h and mvBlueFOX3-2032, in the future, customers will be able to order the 5.1 megapixel IMX250 as the mvBlueCOUGAR-XD105a or the mvBlueFOX3-2051.

The first samples are made available during Q3 2015, and the range will be launched during Q1 2016. The lower frame rate version, promised by SONY, will follow shortly after as the mvBlueCOUGAR-X and mvBlueFOX3-2 models.

For those who desire IMX image quality, the IMX174 and IMX249 now come as standard with the mvBlueFOX3-2 USB 3.0 camera, the mvBlueCOUGAR-X Gigabit Ethernet camera and the mvBlueCOUGAR-XD Dual-Gigabit Ethernet camera.
