Air Malta is the country's National Airline. It was set up by a Parliamentary Resolution on 21st March 1973 and was registered as a limited liability company on 30th March 1973.
The company started its flying operations with 2 wet leased Boeing 720BS on 1st April 1974 with scheduled flights to London, Birmingham, Manchester, Rome, Frankfurt, Paris and Tripoli.
Air Malta's schedule now serves around 50 destinations in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and the Gulf.
Air Malta forms part of the Air Malta Group which is made up of 15 major subsidiaries and 4 associated companies all operating within the tourist / air transportation industry.
Last year Malta's National Airline carried more than 1.6 million passengers.
Over its 25 year history, starting from humble beginnings, Air Malta invested millions of Liri in airline personnel, carried more than 21 million passengers, flew more than 92,000 tonnes of cargo, earned Lm 1 billion in revenue, insured cumulative tax charge of Lm 24 million and paid back its shareholders Lm 8.2 million in dividends.
