Since its initial R&D efforts in the 70s by Prof. Hsueh of the Shipbuilding Department of H.U.S.T., the novel "flat bow and cochlea-channeled stern" shipform has had its model undergo over 200 tests and investigations. Full scale ships that are in service amount to more than 40, including passenger ships, coastal Ro-Ro, high speed ferry, sightseeing houseboats, push-tugboats, dinks and ships for shallow water and rapids navigation. In particular, the third generation of the flat bow and cochlea-channeled shipform that passed the ministerial certification in May 1994 has improved the marine performance a great deal and was certified to have reached advance world level. The achievement made Prof. Hsueh as winner of National Prize for Major Research Projects.

In brief, "Flat bow and Cochlea-channeled stern" shipform has superior performance in the area of energy saving, comfort manoeuvrability, navigation stability and propulsion efficiency. It can increase the Q.P.C. (propulsion efficiency) from the traditional 0.52 to 0.89, reduce the fuel-consumption of ordinary vessel by as high as 30%.
