ASRY is owned by the seven OAPEC countries - Barhrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Libyan Jamahiriyah, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

The Yard was first conceived in 1968 with the aim of building and operating a well-equipped and efficient repair yard, with sufficient capacity to accommodate the VLCC/ULCCs serving the Arabian Gulf oil terminals.
