Company Profile

Sigmund Hartz and his son, Harris S. Hartz, founded Hartz & Company Inc. in Baltimore, Maryland in 1893. In 1931, Hartz opened additional plants in New Windsor and Union Bridge, Maryland and, in 1935, purchased two additional factories in Baltimore. In 1972, Hartz opened their modern manufacturing plant in Brunswick, Maryland. Abraham J. Cohen joined Hartz as President in 1975 and the offices and distribution center were moved to Frederick. In 1983 Hartz consolidated all operations to a 120,000 square foot facility in Frederick. The Hartz facility in Broadway, Virginia was opened in 1988. It is an 110,000 square foot facility housing trouser manufacturing, Gerber computer cutting, fabric treatment and finishing. It is also the location for the research and development facility.
Hartz was the recipient of the All Star Award for technological excellence and leadership in 1991. In 1995, Hartz purchased Oakloom Clothes, a factory producing hand-tailored coats.
In 2001, Robert M. Watson, the newly appointed CEO, initiated the Quality Circle Program to enhance quality awareness throughout the company.
