OfficeMax was co-founded by Michael Feuer, the Company's current Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, on April 1, 1988. OfficeMax's first store opened three months later, on July 5, 1988, in the Cleveland suburb of Mayfield Heights. OfficeMax was the 19th office products superstore chain to enter the then embryonic industry. OfficeMax provides goods and services to small and medium-size businesses, home office customers and individual consumers through almost 1,000 superstores and delivery centers in the United States, on the Internet at OfficeMax.com, via direct mail catalogs and through a nationwide commercial sales force.
OfficeMax superstores offer customers thousands of brand name and private label office products at guaranteed low prices. In addition to office supplies, business electronics, software and related items, OfficeMax also features CopyMax® and FurnitureMax®. These store-within-a-store modules offer print-for-pay services and an extensive office furniture assortment. The latest OfficeMax superstore format is approximately 20,000 gross square feet with a layout and store traffic pattern that is fast and convenient to shop with a focus on higher profit margin office supplies. A trained staff and a quick checkout process provide a convenient and customer-friendly shopping environment.
Through joint ventures, OfficeMax also operates international superstore chains in Brazil and Mexico. In 2001, the Company plans to continue to develop its global presence using its current international store base as a springboard to additional markets around the world.
Today, OfficeMax operates almost 1,000 stores in 49 states, the U.S. Caribbean, Brazil and Mexico as well as a leading e-commerce site and commercial sales force.
