Concentrated Solar Power
Concerning solar power, photovoltaics is not the only available option. Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technology provides for electricity generation as well, above all for large-scale applications. Amongst the various CSP processes, solar power plants with parabolic trough technology have proven their practical value for more than 20 years. SCHOTT Solar is one of the world’s leading suppliers of a key component for this technology – the receiver.

CSP technology converts sunlight to heat through parabolic trough power plants: using large rows of parabolic-shaped mirrors, the sun's radiation is concentrated up to 80-fold on the receivers. Heat transfer oil is heated here, and, via a heat exchanger, steam emerges that in turn drives traditional steam turbines. Thermal accumulators enable reliable generation of electricity, even at night.

In contrast to photovoltaic systems that are generally used for decentralised usage, Concentrated Solar Power plants are ideal for the central generation of energy. Such power plants can be run especially well within the earth's sun belt – it would be possible to produce Europe’s electricity consumption several times over by using CSP only within the states of the Mediterranean region.1 As a further advantage, Concentrated Solar Power plants can be combined with fossil energy sources or biomass. Therefore, it is possible to realize a safe energy supply with a high solar content.

After SCHOTT had successfully manufactured special glass tubes for the receiver casing in the 1980th, SCHOTT Solar advanced to become a technology leader for this key component with a new receiver, fully developed in-house. So it was not a coincidence that SCHOTT Solar delivered more than 23,000 receivers for the first European solar power plant in the south of Spain.
SCHOTT Solar with its high performance receivers – which comprise the core of all solar power plants using parabolic trough technology – contributes decisively to making tomorrow's energy production possible today, using proven technology which, with regard to economy, security of supply and climatic protection, has several advantages on its side.

A solar power plant of this magnitude with an output of 50 megawatts consists of approx. 360,000 square metres reflecting surface and 15,000 receivers with a total length of about 60 kilometres.

SCHOTT PTR 70 Receiver
With development and production of receivers, we advance as one of the world's leading suppliers of Concentrated Solar Power plant components. At the same time, this young business field completes SCHOTT Solar's product portfolio for the use of solar energy.

In addition to the optical precision of the mirrors the four-metre-long receivers, which are vacuum-sealed and embedded in a glass body, play a key role in the efficiency of parabolic trough power plants. They convert the solar radiation to heat. The sheath consists of coated, highly transparent and robust borosilicate glass. The SCHOTT PTR® 70 Receiver has a new type of anti-reflection coating which has a high abrasion resistance and at the same time allows the transmission of more than 96 percent of the sun's radiation. The absorber coating has an absorption degree of approx. 95 percent and very low emittance of below 10 percent heat radiation at a temperature of about 350 to 400 centigrade. The glass-to-metal sealing and the bellow, that is necessary to compensate the different expansion of glass and metal, are not arranged in succession (as it is common) but on top of each other. This means that about 96 percent of the receiver's length is actually used – around two percent more than with competitors' products. Comparison measurements by the “Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt” (DLR) on the “Plataforma Solar de Almería” testing grounds in southern Spain have confirmed that the SCHOTT PTR® 70 Receiver is two percent more efficient.

Recycling

SCHOTT Solar Wafers
Natural resources form the fundamental basis not only for our livelihood, but for our very existence and for that of future generations. SCHOTT Solar is making a contribution by treating these resources with care to promote sustainable economic development. The recycling of used materials and products is an important part of saving natural resources.

SCHOTT Solar is a founding member of PV Cycle. Leading module manufacturers have come together and are using a variety of methods to develop a voluntary industry-wide take back and recycling program. Taking all of the ecological and economic criteria into consideration, all of the old modules are to be returned into the new manufacturing process.

Wafers

SCHOTT Solar Wafers
To manufacture wafers, the ingot, which is grown by melting and crystallising high purity silicon, is subsequently cut during the blocking process into “bricks,” and then processed into wafers. Our wafers have a low breakage rate in the cell production. By using top quality raw materials, plus our crystal growth know-how, an industrial scale continuous ingot crystal growth is achieved.

State of the art technology is used in our silicon brick manufacturing process, enabling us to deliver a high quality product whilst achieving minimal cutting losses. Our manufacturing process includes a fully automated 100% inspection of the wafers, this is carried out under our thorough, certified quality assurance system.

Building Integrated

Architectural solutions
In addition to generating energy, ASI® Glass modules for architecturale solutions provide several functions for modern solar architecture. Both opaque laminates (ASI® OPAK) and semitransparent laminates or double-glazing (ASI® THRU) meet the requirements of the building industry and can therefore be used with several traditional metal structure systems. Successfully used for more than 15 years, a comprehensive product range is available today: from standard formats to specific superstructures. Whatever the future holds.

Industrial references
The roofs and façades of industrial buildings frequently provide good conditions for solar installations: large, unshaded surfaces. So why not use them to produce electricity?
Architecture references
Integrated solar glass is a superb design element. With the range from opaque to semitransparent, architects can combine functionality and aesthetics. In the building sector, SCHOTT ASI® Glass modules provide a wide variety of application options like semitransparent façade glazing, double roof glazing and rear-ventilated façades.

Farmer references
The agricultural sector often provides very good conditions for the use of solar power modules: large roofs with little shadows and easy installation options. The sustainable solar power modules made by SCHOTT Solar provide attractive yields over a long period of time. Whatever the future holds.
Off-grid applications
Many people around the globe have to live without electricity. Stand-alone solar solutions are often the only practicable and economically reasonable option to supply electricity when a connection to the grid is either too expensive or not possible due to technical issues.
Concentrated Solar Power
Concentrated Solar Power plants with parabolic trough technology convert sunlight into heat, which is used to drive steam turbines that in turn produce electricity. The receiver which absorbs the concentrated sunlight is one of the main components of parabolic through plants. SCHOTT Solar sees itself as the world's leading company offering such receivers and is hence a main driver of the large-scale production of electricity in Concentrated Solar Power plants.
