3 phase slip ring induction motors for industrial requirements

3 phase slip ring induction motors from MENZEL provide sound technology for demanding drive operations during milling, breaking, pressing, crane facilities amongst others.

Our three-phase motors with slip ring rotor are especially in demand in industrial areas where high starting and breakaway torques or power ranges have to be implemented, or where extreme load peaks arise and when largely low starting currents are required in relation to output.

3 phase slip ring induction motors from MENZEL are available with various cooling and protection systems. The slip ring motors in our MEBSGR series that are described in the following text are in the IC 411 cooling class, known as "surface-cooled" or “ribbed-cooled”. In addition, we have motors with air-air heat exchangers (IC 611, IC 616, and IC 666), pipe-cooled (IC 511), open circuit-cooled (IC 01), as well as water-cooled (IC 81W) three-phase motors with slip ring rotor.

Three-phase slip ring motors in the MEBSGR series - characteristics

Three-phase motors with slip ring rotors are generally characterized by high torques upon starting, a low starting current, and a smooth start at high load. Their rotational speed can be monitored via simple means.

Three-phase motors in the MEBSGR series are used in extremely varied industries such as cement, paper, water management, or steel - applications requiring high moment of inertia or in case of weak power supply. They are used as drives for mills, breakers, shredders, or refiners, etc. They are extremely reliable and also very resilient, which is due to their robust design as well as the torsion-resistant and vibration-resistant motor housing.

Industrial customers worldwide appreciate the effectiveness and the lower operating costs of MENZEL three-phase motors with slip ring rotor. The MEBSGR series impresses with high material quality, the use of low-loss sheets and sophisticated design. All these factors have a positive effect on the effectiveness of the motor, which is already very much so. The use of generously-proportioned bearings and durable design also mean that the maintenance costs of these motors are kept very low.

Typical applications of 3 phase slip ring induction motors:

User industries:

  • Cement industry
  • Paper industry
  • Water management
  • Steel industry
  • Raw materials industry

IC 411 slip ring motors typically drive:

  • Mill drives
  • Breaker and shredder drives
  • Refiner drives
  • Crane drives
  • Conveyor belt drive

The surface-cooling principle in slip ring induction motors (IC 411)

The standard three-phase slip ring induction motor in protection class IP 55 has IC 411 cooling. This cooling type corresponds to the design of a surface-cooled motor with a housing featuring cooling fins and an external fan mounted on the shaft. The dissipated heat generated in the motor is output to the motor housing and is discharged by the cooling air of the external fan via the cooling fins.

Three-phase induction motors with slip ring rotor in the IC 411 cooling class are also designated as rib-cooled motors. All slip ring rotor motors with surface cooling generally have rotation-independent external fans. The internal air circuit is also rotation-independent.
