X-ray and, in particular, combined with 3D CT are the most efficient and cost-effective testing methods to ensure product quality without destroying or altering the inspection part.

NDT – a smart procedure for today’s materials testing

Destructive testing methods like bending, crushing, torsion tests or micrographs have one big disadvantage: Because they result in irreversible damage, the component under inspection cannot reenter the production process after testing. In the age of digitization and interconnected industrial production, non-destructive testing proves to be the smartest choice for modern quality control and assurance. Whether it is used in the evaluation of individual components or whole production processes, for the assessment of geometry or composition properties of a specific part – modern NDT supplies manufacturers with valuable data that can be used for feedback loops, statistical evaluations, and automation in the smart factory.

The basics of non-destructive testing with X-ray and CT

While the term industrial X-ray refers to the classic radiographic process of generating two-dimensional (2D) images of a component, industrial computed tomography (CT) is the X-ray method that combines 2D X-ray images to create a three-dimensional (3D) model. Both methods require an X-ray source that emits the radiation from the focal spot through the object to an X-ray detector. The detector, a one-dimensional line detector array (LDA) or two-dimensional flat-panel detector (digital detector array, DDA), picks up the radiation. In the final image, different shades of gray represent different density values and thus display material properties or defects.
