Dr. Sick would be 112 years old now, and still ahead of his time \u2013 with his aspiration to do good for the world and all people by means of technical progress. SICK celebrates its 75-year jubilee this year. Its impressive history still drives its will to shape the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The world is undergoing change. Whether digitalization, the finite nature of resources, the changing world of work, or increasing global networking \u2013 a general atmosphere of renewal is spreading. People are seeking new paths; setting off to make new discoveries and change the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of these people work at SICK: They shape the world together. This has been the aspiration since Dr. Sick wanted to make the world a bit better with his inventions and founded this company in 1946.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company has learnt far-sightedness, courage, and a wealth of ideas from its founder. About 10,500 employees now represent a worldwide network of innovation and progress, quality and dependability. Again and again, the inventive spirit and curiosity make the company set off for new shores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Sick described himself as a \u201cpassionate inventor,\u201d who wanted to develop \u201cdevices with flair\u201d that \u201ccould do more than others.\u201d In a speech in 1971, Dr. Sick said that: \u201cWe definitely do not need more technology, but better and more appropriate technology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SICK’s innovative strength is vital for our economic success. And innovations are only economically sustainable \u201cif they improve the current state and anticipate future developments.\u201d The company is not interested in technology for technology\u2019s sake, but in changing the world by improving its sensor solutions wherever it can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Progress for the benefit of humanity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Sick founded his company when the effects of the Second World War were ever-present. Consistently supported by his wife, Gisela Sick, protecting people and the environment using sensors was his entrepreneurial drive. In addition to automation using optical technologies, Dr. Sick was above all motivated by machine safety. With the first light curtain, he not only developed an innovative sensor solution, but also became involved in working out safety standards and principles. He ultimately presented the first serially produced light curtain for accident prevention at the 2nd International Machine Tool Exhibition in Hanover in 1952.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Measurement of emissions was another early mainstay. Visits to the Ruhr region \u2013 and the smoking chimneys there \u2013 opened Dr. Sick\u2019s eyes to how important it was to combine industrial and technical progress with a responsible treatment of the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Dr. Sick died on December 3, 1988, at the age of 79, it was Mrs. Gisela Sick who immediately signaled that she wanted to continue her husband\u2019s life work. In her letter to the employees, she said: \u201cWe will succeed in taking Dr. Sick GmbH into the future under the proven and well-founded leadership of our management, and with their energetic cooperation.\u201d And this has been the case ever since, because the SICK family is committed to its legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SICK grows: pioneers in many countries and specialist fields<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company has succeeded by combining forces. The founding of its first subsidiary in France in 1972 laid the foundation for the company\u2019s international expansion. A subsidiary was founded in the USA only three years later, in 1975. More than 4,000 employees were active in the SICK Group when the company celebrated its 60-year jubilee in 2006. Over the years, SICK has repeatedly scored points with technical innovations, such as 2D and 3D camera sensors or radio-based RFID technologies. And new additions to the Group have also expanded the portfolio, for example with encoder expertise from SICK STEGMANN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fourth industrial revolution during the 2010s offered SICK a wide variety of new possibilities. Digitalization is only possible with sensors that provide data. The SICK team is growing again: Software experts are called for. Internal start-ups provide new thinking spaces and invite discussion. Artificial intelligence, deep learning, the connection of sensors with the cloud \u2013 new paths open up to complement our business with sensors and systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SICK is not only setting off for new shores in the virtual world, but also in reality: It leaves the works halls of this world and venture outside with its outdoorScan3. It enables AGV systems to navigate safely with the world\u2019s first safety laser scanner \u2013 even the weather has become an irrelevance thanks to our new outdoor-SafeHDDM\u00ae scanning technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But all these new worlds are not enough for SICK \u2013 it dares to take a quantum leap. It is developing industrial quantum sensors with its collaboration partner TRUMPF to detect the finest of dust particles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diversity is a superpower<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Sick believed that technological diversity was our greatest strength, and consistently expanded it. The company still do this: The diverse range of applications in many markets has also made it a diverse company in cultural terms. Its community of colleagues now includes 50 subsidiaries and associated companies all over the world, and it makes its products on three continents. What Dr. Sick wanted to expand into a \u201chealthy SME with 80 to 100 selected personnel\u201d is now a global group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SICK’s growing diversity is the sum of its decisions. The company is experts in its own ways, in its tasks \u2013 whether specialist, technological, or cultural. But what is decisive for its success is that it brings all this diversity together and jointly work to convince its customers and partners of its capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SICK moves the world forward with its sensor solutions \u2013 just as much now as 75 years ago. The courage, creativity, and innovative power of all its employees make this possible. The team members all contribute towards SICK’s pioneering superpowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
