automation with its combination of efficiency and convenience. The different
performance classes provide the fast-flexible-economical solution for
machine tools, production machines, robotics and handling. XCx also makes a
convincing contribution to factory automation as central or sub-controllers.
Complicated PLC programming for simple axis control? Doing without the
convenience of PLC in complex CNC applications? Permanent CNC/PLC
synchronization on the XCx gives an enormous boost to productivity, because
it allows complex processes that would normally be unthinkable. Transparent
integration of motion and logic control opens up unimagined new
possibilities, such as position detection on interrupt signal, valve control
linked to path motion, adapting welding current to path feedrate, or simple
activation of saved motion programs to coordinate smooth movements.

XCx-micro

Your introduction to the world of Schleicher’s
top-quality XCx controller family
PLC with 22.5-mm modules and high I/O channel density
At the 2005 SPS/IPC/Drives Schleicher unveiled the new XCx-micro
mini-controller, expanding the bottom end of the fast XCx controller range.
It is based on modules just 22.5 mm wide. The heart of an XCx-micro systems
is the PLC module with CANbus interface (CANopen), two RS 232 interfaces and
a maintenance-free battery for buffering the real-time clock and memory. The
second module of the basic setup is a 24 V power pack that supplies the CPU
and up to eight additional connected modules. The I/O modules are designed
for classic enclosure operation with single-conductor connection. Thus you
will find space for up to 14 24 V connections on each module. This compact
and cost-effective PLC for small and medium-sized machines consequentially
achieves – if we take the power supply into consideration – one of the
highest channel densities of any control system in this market segment. The
XCx-micro possesses a large memory, can be configured in any of the five
languages of the IEC 61131-3 standard and is fully multi-tasking-capable. As
well as the new digital and analog I/O modules you can also connect
three-wire function modules – thermoelements or fast counters for example –
from Schleicher’s familiar RIO range wirelessly to an XCx-micro using an
adapter.

microLine – the Economical First Step

The low cost microLine rounds off our range of
controllers. Small, black and strong, for the less complicated automation
tasks and distributed data (pre-)processing. With its expansion modules for
fast counters, positioning and axis interface, microLine creates on-the-spot
function systems, e.g. for controlling feed axes.
- Stand-alone or with CANopen interface
- Powerful PLC with multitasking operating system
- 8 RIO I/O modules can be connected in any combination
- Up to 128 digital or 56 analog I/Os can be connected locally
- Distributed expansion via CANopen to max. 127 bus stations
- MULTIPROG programming system to IEC 61131-3 under Windows
- Serial interface for programming, visualization and terminal operation
- Integrated startup and diagnosis functions (see RIO Bus Couplers)
microLine only shows its true strength when it is networked in the CANopen
field bus. Rather than increasing the performance of the master PLC in a
control system, part of the data processing is undertaken in parallel by
distributed local microLines. The advantages are convincing: fast response
times, optimal adaptation of controller performance, reduced bus load,
segmented startup and improved emergency running properties.

XSF / XSL Function Modules

XSF: Novel quality of space-time coordinate control –
resolution: 1 µs
Point-precision space-time coordinate control is a decisive quality and
efficiency factor when processing units are supposed to deliver higher
precision at extremely fast work intervals and dynamic motion sequences.
At the 2010 Hannover Fair, Schleicher will introduce its latest generation
of control modules: the XSF multi-function module with its XSL version,
especially for laser technology. An outstanding characteristic of this
programmable hardware is the extremely high resolution of 1 µs of the timer
tick. The resulting edge change frequency is suitable, for instance, for
high-precision cutting-laser control at optimum perforation positioning -
even, and especially with, fast and highly dynamically controlled outline
runs. The precision time laser modulation at the scheduled position makes
statements in automated space-time coordination.
Laser modulation precision results from the PWM signal, generated via XSL
module, with a max. starting frequency of 1 MHz, at high edge steepness. The
high digital resolution furthermore allows for optical measurement of the
finest structures, while the feature of processing digital signal at minimum
processing time gives rise to new speed options for various applications,
for instance for cam controller functions
A clear flexibility advantage: upgrade in 10 seconds
The new XSF components, beyond the high resolution, also set the benchmark
for increased flexibility: the user himself imports updates or functional
upgrades to the modules at minimal effort.
Step 1: Schleicher provides the respective data sets - for instance
via email.
Step 2: The user saves these, for instance on a USB stick
Step 3: ...and transfers them via USB interface to his XSF units. The
updates/upgrades become effective with the next system start.
Production is only interrupted by an upgrade for the duration of the
updating process. Generally, this is no more than a period of ten seconds.
Depending on configuration, the components offer different
inputs/outputs:
- up to 4 incremental encoder inputs,
- up to 3 absolute encoder inputs (SSI) and
- up to 4 multiphase motor/servo controller outputs
Further standard functions/standard options, among others, are as
follows:
- counter function
- time-controlled output (1µs)
- time recording of an input signal (1µs) as well as
- an open port for client-specific logic function.
The modular structure of the functions as well as the hardware architecture
allow for parallel implementation of different scenarios on a single module.

Distributed I/O Systems
Intelligent Signal Management
Field bus connection of peripherals is standard these days. This increases
the importance of intelligent signal management for efficient mediation
between controller and periphery. The well thought-out, advanced RIO I/O
system is streets ahead with its wide range of modules, which pick up, pass
on and output the process-specific signal mix as required. RIO offers
further scope for increasing the efficiency of periphery communication with
the microLine mini-controller and the RIO function modules, which allow
distributed data preprocessing with plant-floor controller performance.
Bus Couplers connect the modules to a Profibus-DP, CANopen, DeviceNet
or InterBus field bus:

Machine Data Logger MDL

Security with a userbased guarantee
The machine data logger (MDL) saves any process data permanently and securly.
The incorruptible proof of operating conditions, machine use , maintenance
etc. makes it possible to achieve a performance based warentee. Utilization
warrenties offer enormous advantages for machine maufacturers the same as
for machine users. The usual timebased garrantees in every case try to reach
the specifred machine operating time and therefore plan difficult calculable
risks like machine limistations and incomplete service. The MDL excludes
such risks: manufactures now define their guarrantee limits, and users can
plan reliably.
Increased availability, reduced service costs
The Machine data logger (MDL) can save costs for the user by user defined
service intervals. The MDL supports early warning functions of the
manufactures, warning if selected operating parameters reach a limit:
production interuptions are reduced so resulting service costs only load
dependent. The secure production data acquisition increases the market value
of the machine by the MDL and creates an additional security during the
rental, for example with construction machines.
Incorruptible control
The manufacturer can lock the MDL parameters using a PC- programm. In
operation the master- SPS writes the selected process data over the profibus-
DP. Every access is recorded with an internal time marker. The stored data
is retained over 15 years and can be read in a table format by the machine
manufacturer via a USB- interface. Every MDL works with machine related and
blocks similary to a dongle by deactivating the SPS. Also exchange of the
MDL or the access to the data storage is impossible.

Multitasking
All Schleicher controllers have multi-tasking operating
systems for optimal adaptation to the process. Individual program modules
detect and process machine events in millisecond cycles. This produces an
extremely short delay time, guaranteeing outstanding repeatability in
production.
The time-critical programs are controlled in the fast high-priority tasks.
Monitoring programs and user guidance are processed in the mid- and
low-priority tasks.
Tasks are processed in order of priority, ensuring that the critical
processes are handled first, and completely. The less critical processes are
handled in the remaining time according to their priority.
