  • Technology

      • MEMS Gyroscopes

      • MEMS gyroscopes, or strictly speaking MEMS angular rate sensors, are used whenever rate of turn (°/s) sensing is required without a fixed point of reference. This separates gyros from any other means of measuring rotation, such as a tachometer or potentiometer.

Silicon Sensing’s MEMS gyros all use the same unique patented VSG resonating ring technology to sense rotation rate through a phenomenon known as coriolis. The basic construction and principles of operation are explained briefly below.

Silicon Sensing produced the first MEMS VSG in the late 1990s, since then well over 20,000,000 MEMS gyros have been delivered to thousands of satisfied customers. To the best of our knowledge, almost all of these gyros are still operating satisfactorily after 20 years of continuous service, testament to the reliability of VSG. There are now three generations of MEMS VSG; Inductive, Capacitive and PZT, allowing Silicon Sensing to produce a wide range of MEMS VSG gyros from low-cost, precision, chipscale sensors (e.g.PinPoint®) up to FOG-grade high performance MEMS Gyro modules (eg CRH02 and CRS39).
      • MEMS Accelerometers

      • MEMS accelerometers are used wherever there is a need to measure linear motion, either movement, shock or vibration but without a fixed reference. They measure the linear acceleration of whatever they are attached to. Acceleration is measured in m/s-2, but the convention for accelerometers is in ‘g’, or units of gravity, 1g being 9.81m/s-2.

All accelerometers work on the principle of a mass on a spring, when the thing they are attached to accelerates then the mass wants to remain stationary due to its inertia and therefore the spring is stretched or compressed, creating a force which is detected and corresponds to the applied acceleration.
      • Coriolis

      • n 1835 French engineer-mathematician Gustave-Gaspard Coriolis described a force which acts at right angles to the ordinary Newtonian laws of motion when they are used in a rotating frame of reference. The effect of the Coriolis force is an apparent deflection of the path of an object. The object does not actually deviate from the path but appears to because of the motion of the co-ordinate system.
      • Evolution of VSG

      • Silicon Sensing MEMS gyros are Vibrating Structure gyroscopes (VSGs). These VSGs use shell (cylinder or ring) structures and work on the Coriolis forces where forces are observed when linear motion occurs in a rotating frame. The mechanics of the vibrations in a stationary mode and a dynamic mode are shown on the following pages.
      • The Future

      • Silicon Sensing engineers and physicists are busy taking the MEMS inertial sensor technology to new levels of accuracy and precision, and are developing a whole new range of sensor modules and IMUs.
      • IMU Calibration

      • Because of the particular MEMS construction of our gyros and accelerometers, they naturally offer higher performance than other MEMS inertial sensors in today's marketplace. And this has naturally positioned Silicon Sensing at the high-performance end of the sensor spectrum. However, to significantly improve the overall performance of Silicon Sensing's IMUs, which use our own MEMS inertial sensors, we have invested heavily in a world-leading calibration facility at our premises in the UK.
    • Gyroscopes

    • Silicon Sensing produces a wide range of single-axis silicon MEMS Gyroscope sensors and modules to suit most applications where customers value product functionality, performance and integrity, and expert technical support. The ring technology provides superior performance in high shock and vibration environments. Most of these gyros are in stock and available for immediate delivery.
