                An increasing number of countries have legislation in place that makes the processing of materials, the sorting of scrap metal, and the recovery of valuables mandatory, easing the disposal of residue material. TOMRA Sorting assists its customers in effectively and efficiently sorting recovered scrap metal, resulting in high-quality yields and providing sustainable economic and environmental benefits. 

                  • END-OF-LIFE VEHICLE SCRAP | SHREDDER

                  • The growing demand for high-value, secondary raw materials renders targeted recycling increasingly attractive. Modern TOMRA Sorting technology generates clean non-ferrous metal fractions in customer shredder operations and results in valuable scrap metal gains.

                    The aim of scrap sorting in a shredder process is to generate clean, metal fractions from a very complex – and varied - input stream. These input streams contain ferrous metals like unalloyed steel, non-ferrous metals like aluminum, copper and brass, as well as plastics, glass and compound materials. Through a pre-sales consulting service, TOMRA Sorting engineers support ELV shredder operators by co-designing a customer-specific sorting solution that leads to high-quality yields while keeping the process and disposal costs as low as possible.

                  • ELECTRONIC SCRAP | WEEE

                  • The growing demand for high-value, secondary raw materials makes targeted recycling increasingly attractive. In the EU alone, experts estimated over 8 million tons of disused electrical equipment in 2010. TOMRA Sorting’s goal is to utilize electronic scrap sorting to sort out pollutants as well as high-purity components.

                    The WEEE Directive (RL 2002/96/EC) has required the collection and recycling of used electrical equipment since 2003. Additionally, the growing global demand for valuable secondary raw material also serves to encourage high-quality electronic scrap sorting. Waste Electronic Equipment contain a sizeable amount of these worthy materials, such as steel, aluminum, gold, silver, platinum or copper. Effective sensor sorting through TOMRA Sorting ensures that it doesn‘t go to waste.

                  • ASH RECYCLING

                  • Incinerated municipal solids and other waste streams results in a significant amount of ash residue, which often contains valuable metals. The amount of this remnant being created globally is rapidly increasing due to legislation which prohibits landfilling and creates new incentives for incineration. TOMRA Sorting sensor-based systems allow waste management businesses to capitalize on today’s challenges whilst simultaneously enabling them to look to the future with confidence.

                    Many countries will have to consider incineration in order to manage their waste, due to a lack of space and a desire to achieve internationally recognized environmental targets. High metal content that exists within the resulting ash residue represents a commercial and environmental opportunity for waste management businesses.

                    The recovery of ferrous and non-ferrous metals from ashes is a very important part of an incinerator’s recycling footprint. It has traditionally been efficiently achieved by using magnets which recover over 90% of the metals. The non-ferrous metals traditionally have been recovered by Eddy Current Separators. However, this technology does not perform as well and recovery rates for the non-ferrous metals are only 40% at maximum. Introducing TOMRA Sensor equipment to an existing process immediately minimizes metals losses and maximizes revenue.

                  • NON-FERROUS METALS | POST SHREDDER

                  • The widespread use of electronic products has created an enormous demand for the sorting of non-ferrous metals such as copper and aluminum. To be usable, these non-ferrous metal fractions must be treated to a high degree of purity. Thanks to TOMRA’s efficient sorting technology, separating these materials from metal waste makes is worthwhile in every aspect.

                    TOMRA Sorting’s efficient non-ferrous metals sorting and recycling technology provides benefits for shredder machinery, heavy media operators and aluminum re-smelters. Shredder operators can create individual fractions out of mixed product which yield much higher market values. Heavy media operators can produce and sell pure final products themselves, meaning their investment in technology is recouped quickly. After wet processing, the aluminum product still contains impurities and its concentration can be improved further using TOMRA sorting technology and sold for a considerably higher profit.

                    Finally, the need to sort small grain sizes continues to increase. TOMRA Sorting offers belt and free-fall [chute] machines, which are able to sort very fine non-ferrous metals by efficiently detecting and sorting material such as copper, brass and aluminum and create high value products.

                  • WIRE RECOVERY

                  • Previously, cable and wire materials were often lost in the treatment and sorting process, resulting in a financial loss due to the high proportion of copper they contain. TOMRA sorting technologies are capable of detecting these wires, transferring them to a metal product and then finally sorting them in a further step into a cable fraction of outstanding purity.

                    A good example of a high-quality product is copper wiring and insulated wires stemming from various treatment processes. Secondary copper smelting plants and cable treatment companies require high-quality input in order to work efficiently.

                    TOMRA combined two of its sensor technologies with SUPPIXX® image processing, making it possible to detect and separate even the smallest metal particles. The two signals are combined and processed to produce one statement, resulting in effective and profitable recovery of resources in ways previously unimaginable.

                  • FINES COPPER SORTING

                  • Copper granulate, recovered by the recycling process of copper wires and cables, has the potential to be a high value resource. However, even after the removal of impurities, polymers and ferrous from the granulate, it can still contain small amounts of lead, brass or aluminum – often up to three percent. TOMRA sorting technology removes the remaining pollutants efficiently and automatically from the copper granulate – with an especially high efficiency of lead removal.

                    Common copper sorting technologies, such as eddy current sorters or densimetric tables, do not remove all impurities. TOMRA Sorting has developed an innovative sensor-based copper sorting solution which removes the granulate's remaining pollutants efficiently and automatically, and is particularly effective at extracting lead. The copper sorting machine uses optical free fall detection and high speed air jets to separate the materials.

                  • ZORBA

                  • The value of Zorba – shredded non-ferrous metals originating from end-of-life vehicles or WEEE – continues to increase, as the demand for copper, nickel and brass created by modern lifestyles is on the rise. TOMRA’s sensor-based sorting technology can double the value of Zorba.

                    Many re-processors are limited by using only traditional processing methods, such as manual sorting or sink-float treatments for Zorba. Others are selling on the mixed material instead of directly recovering high quality fractions themselves. Because the cost of running TOMRA’s sensor-based systems is just 20 percent of that of dense media plants, and with global demand for recovered mixed metals continuing to rise, metal reprocessors and materials recovery facility operators can significantly enhance their profitability by directly recovering high quality fractions with this state-of-the-art technology.

                    • PACKAGING

                    • Packaging waste is mostly made up of different polymers, beverage cartons, paper and glass. Depending on the country in question, different collection systems apply and the material will invariably arrive in different conditions to the MRF’s (Materials Recovery Facility).

                      At TOMRA Sorting, regardless of the collection system operated, we are able to optimally sort the valuable fractions from packaging waste with high efficiency and purity.

                      We currently operate packaging waste sorting units at packaging MRF’s in many countries including Belgium, Canada, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain, UK and USA.                     • The recovery of valuable paper fractions from a paper sorting waste stream has been common practice for many years.                       Traditional manual or semi-automated techniques are only able to recover low levels of separate materials from commercial and industrial waste streams. In contrast, TOMRA Sorting’s fully adjustable, state-of-the-art, senor-based sorting and recycling systems convert complex and varied commercial and industrial streams into high quality, separated output. The systems also make manual picking unnecessary, thus reducing labor costs and material loss while increasing the efficiency of commercial waste recycling.

                    • CONSTRUCTION & DEMOLITION WASTE

                    • The growing demand for high-value secondary materials renders high quality recycling increasingly attractive. Thousands of tons of recyclable materials from construction and demolition (C&D) activities are sent to landfill every day, resulting in increasingly higher costs - and lost profit.

                      Construction and demolition (C&D) waste represents the largest source of waste in Europe and comprises of a complex mix of materials, including inert material, wood, paper, plastics and metals. Reprocessing these secondary fractions is more energy efficient than using virgin material and improves the carbon footprint. Additionally, increasing landfill costs also mean alternative disposal options are urgently needed.

                      With TOMRA's pioneering and efficient sorting technology, separating valuable materials from C&D waste makes it worthwhile - in every aspect.

                    • ORGANIC WASTE

                    • The total waste volume contains a high percentage of organic waste material. Depending on the origin country, this fraction is treated in different ways. Within the organic fraction, the inert material can cause significant problems during the different treatment processes.

                      Inert organic waste material content must be reduced to a minimum in such a way that as little organic material as possible is lost. In order to operate an effective and efficient organic waste separation machine, it is necessary to empty and clean the decomposition unit more frequently. Time spent cleaning the organic waste separation machine will inevitably mean a loss of time in the bio-gas production process. Potential mechanical component damage from inorganic residue build up will also lead to additional maintenance costs.

                    • REFUSE DERIVED FUEL

                    • One way in which valuables within waste can be utilized is by using it as fuel. Refuse derived fuel (RDF) is a term that applies to materials with a high calorific value (typically around 18 Mega joule per kilogram) that are removed from waste streams. Beneficiaries of this material are cement kilns to power plants.

                      TOMRA Sorting technology has long been utilized in many plants across Europe to produce a refused derived fuel material from different waste streams according to the specific needs of the end users. Quality assurance of solid recovered fuel (RDF) by random sample analysis is challenging, due to small sample sizes and differing laboratory results.

                      Online analysis, coupled with TOMRA's AUTOSORT, results in accurate and timely measurements of critical value during operational uptime. Permanent monitoring in real time allows for optimum generated refused derived fuels.

                    • BULKY WASTE

                    • Bulky waste sorting can produce a high number of valuable materials. The accessibility of these materials, however, is challenging due to its cumbersome nature.

                      In order to streamline the separation process, the initial treatment step must involve shredding the input material. Sizing of fractions by screening, followed by separation of light and heavy compartments, is inevitable in order to prepare fractions for sorting. With TOMRA Sorting's AUTOSORT, customers are then able to extract a valuable fractions that may otherwise have been lost.
