  • Cycloidal gears offer unbeatable advantages

The two-stage reduction of cycloidal gears makes solutions from Nabtesco Precision so successful. The reason is that the speed is reduced by the double cams. Vibration is reduced by the two-stage reduction principle and low inertia. The force is also distributed very evenly, thanks to the roller cam design, and this contributes to the minimum hysteresis loss and enormous resistance to shock loading. Consequently, cycloidal gears are as versatile as they are resilient.

The drive or servomotor is connected to the spur gear stage of the gearbox via a pinion. The rotating speed reduces at this point relative to the reduction ratio between the pinion and planetary gear. The planetary gears are connected to crankshafts which drive the cams using needle bearings. These cams rotate inside the case which is lined with pins.

High shock resistance in emergency stop situations

The cam has exactly one eccentric section less than the pin ring has pins. A 360° revolution of the crankshafts therefore causes the cams to rotate one pin farther, whereby practically all the gear teeth are in continuous contact with the pins. The rotating movement is then transmitted from the input shaft to the crankshafts via the spur gear stage, and these then shift the cams in the pin ring and, consequently, generate a reduced speed with high precision. This technology enables the RV gears to absorb 5 times the rated torque in emergency-stop situations without suffering any damage. The resulting overall reduction is the same as the product of the two reduction ratios (spur gear stage and eccentric stage).

    Precise
The cycloidal design of the precision reducer ensures extremely precise operation throughout the entire life cycle, with a hysteresis loss of less than one arcminute. The gear systems with zero backlash* are designed for high repeatability, positioning and rotational accuracy to allow exact positioning even at high speeds and accelerations, which makes them ideal for use as servo gearboxes.

    Robust
Nabtesco gears are extremely robust, durable and low-wear. They feature high overload capability and extreme rigidity, and are insensitive to vibrations. This is likewise an advantage for the servo gearboxes of the RH-N and RD series. The integrated angular ball bearings absorb axial and radial loads, as well as bending moments, which makes the gears highly resistant to impacts and overloads.

    Compact
The high torque density of the low-backlash precision gears enables an extremely compact design. The precision reducer are lightweight, space-saving, and efficient – ideal for all applications requiring high performance and a compact design. Nabtesco offers a large selection of compact servo gearboxes for highly dynamic applications.

            • RV Solid shaft component sets

            • The basis of our precision gears
The RV series forms the basic version of our component sets and therefore the basis for our entire product spectrum. It stands for high reduction ratios and low backlash. The output bearings can be defined individually.

              • Extremely compact design
              • High rigidity
              • High precision (hysteresis loss < 1 arcmin)

Minimal backlash and high reduction ratio

Since the force is transferred by rollers in the eccentric gears of the RV series, they feature high precision and a low hysteresis loss (< 1 arcmin). An angular contact ball bearing is not integrated in the RV component sets. The external bearing provides for a very compact design and ensures high torsional rigidity. In combination with the individually configurable output bearing, this makes the RV series the ideal solution for integrated applications that exactly match your specifications!

The force is transferred by means of rollers in the cycloidal gears. This means that our RV gears feature high efficiency, a long service life and extremely low backlash. The virtually symmetrical gear design and the roller bearing support of all shafts guarantee constant operating behaviour throughout their entire life cycle. In addition, they allow temporary load peaks of up to 5 times the specified rated torque, such as those that can occur in emergency stop situations.

Our RV series has become established for use in a wide range of applications over the past years, for example in robotics, machine tool construction, solar technology and also in palletising applications.

              Applications:

                • Rotary indexers: Strong, precise and compact

                • Rotary indexer or positioner?

Rotary indexers and positioners are additional external robot axes for positioning of workpieces. A positioner normally has several axes, for example one for turning and one for pivoting the workpieces. The rotary movement is generally carried out by rotary indexers. Rotary indexers are therefore often installed as components in positioners. If the application requires a pivot axis, the tables can also be used separately. Conventional rotary indexers are usually equipped with worm gearboxes, which show signs of wear over time, due to their inherent design. Cycloidal gearboxes on the other hand are designed to operate with very little wear and with extremely low backlash of less than one arcminute. Even after extended periods the increase in backlash is negligible.

The two-stage reduction ratio of cycloidal gearboxes is what makes Nabtesco solutions so successful. The reason: The speed is reduced by the double cam. The two-stage reduction principle and the low mass inertia minimize vibrations. In addition, the eccentric roller construction achieves very even distribution of the force, which ensures minimal hysteresis losses and enormous resistance to shock loads.

Axial load capacity: 14,700 N – 88,200 N | Precision: Hysteresis loss < 1 arcmin | High torsional rigidity for exact positioning in dynamic cycles | Very robust | The innovative alternative to servo driven rotary indexers

Positions even the heaviest loads with high precision

The RS series was developed especially for the positioning of heavy loads. These gearheads with hollow shaft have an integrated bevel gear and a stable, durable construction.

Designed for axial loads up to nine tons

The high-precision Trochoid gear units of the RS series with integrated angular gearbox are designed for axial loads of up to 9 t. A cast-iron base ensures a stable, durable floor mounting. The motor is mounted at right angles and is thus easily accessible. With its compact design and exceptional power, the RS series hollow shaft gearboxes are far superior to conventional camshaft and worm gearboxes.

The hollow shaft makes it easy to perform supply lines and cables. In addition, these gear heads work almost free of play. This makes the RS series suitable for a wide range of demanding applications such as machine tools, welding table positioning and turntables as well as large robots.

Areas of application of RS gearheads with hollow shaft:

                  • Robotics: Delta, SCARA and 6-axis robots for painting systems, assembly, PCBs and machine tools

                      • Precision gears for positioning robots

An important focus at Nabtesco is on the development of special gears for high-speed handling and robot-assisted positioning. Robots for pick & place applications and for workpiece positioning operate in industrial environments at ever increasing speeds, which also puts a strain on the gears installed in such systems. In addition to the high acceleration and braking forces of these machines, the engineers also have to be aware of heat generation from the high speeds. Our precision gears fulfil these requirements!

                        • High dynamics: High acceleration rates are important in pick & place applications. Our robotic gears are designed exactly for this requirement!
                        • High precision: The cycloidal design of our precision gears make them very exact. They are ideal for precise pacing and positioning.
                        • Long service life: Eccentric gears feature very low wear and therefore have an extremely long life.

Precision is the top priority in the construction of machine tools: Blanks and tools must be positioned quickly and with micron precision. Complete machining in one single clamping operation prevents inaccuracies that can occur as a result of frequent reclamping of the workpiece.

The compact cycloidal gears from Nabtesco are a proven design for the exact positioning of chain or disc magazines. Compared to planetary gears, their design makes them considerably more precise with less wear and greater reliability. Cycloidal gears also have more compact dimensions. Nabtesco gears have a similar performance level as torque motors, especially for traveling axes, tool changers or CNC rotary tables. However, the reduced energy consumption causes a significantly better economic solution.

                        • High precision: Nabtesco cycloidal gears allow very exact processes in machine tools. Their design results in excellent gear performance with respect to dynamics and smooth operation.
                        • Absolute reliability: Our precision gears have a two stage reduction concept: First stage straight-cut gears, second stage cycloidal gear. That is why Nabtesco gears are extremely reliable. Sudden failures are therefore virtually impossible!
                        • Small dimensions: In machine tools there is often only limited space. That is why Nabtesco developed the eccentric gears of the RH-N and RF-P series to be very compact and lightweight, to meet the requirements of machine tool construction.

                      • Packaging technology

                      • Precision gears for handling and palletising robots

Hygiene and safety are the top priorities in food production and packaging applications. Compliance with extremely stringent hygiene standards is required in the handling, positioning and packaging of foodstuffs. In addition, these applications are becoming more dynamic, faster and more precise. Our cycloidal gears of the RF-P and RH-N series easily fulfil these requirements.

                        • Precise: The two-stage reduction principle of the virtually backlash-free gears results in excellent performance with respect to dynamics and smooth operation, as well as high repeatability and path accuracy.
                        • Hygienic: The eccentric gears of the RH-N series feature an extremely hygienic design with smooth surfaces, optimised seals and, on request, special coatings.
                        • Compact: Our compact cycloidal gears feature a high power density. Their low weight provides for lower mass inertia and improved load conditions.
                      • Antenna construction

                      • Hollow shaft gears for antenna systems

The alignment of large parabolic antennas, such as those used for communication with near-Earth satellites, requires high positioning accuracy. This applies both to the azimuth (the angle between the meridian and vertical plane of a celestial body) and the angle of elevation. The control of these antennas, which have dish diameters of up to 17 metres, requires high torsional and moment rigidity in addition to high reduction ratios. Nabtesco’s compact RV-C hollow shaft gear sets are ideal for this application.

                      • Welding vibration-free point-to-point connections

                      • Cycloidal gears for welding with absolute accuracy

Robotic welding systems have to operate with high speed and absolute precision. Positioners and rotary indexers provide for exact alignment of the workpieces. In welding positioners, a precision gear drives the horizontal rotary axis. This makes it possible to weld all spots along this axis – even complex geometrical structures – within a tolerance of tenths of millimetres, without having to reclamp the workpiece. The weld puddle must be kept exactly in the tray. Nabtesco cycloidal gears are designed for such applications.

                        • High dynamics: Our cycloidal gears enable the fast acceleration and braking of welding positioners.
                        • Extreme precision: Welding robots require maximum precision. Nabtesco gears provide the necessary “sensitivity” in this application.
