      • CLOUD AND NETWORKING

      • Harnessing, directing, and delivering Internet traffic to an insatiable world

Billions of times a day, information from smartphones, tablets, and laptops connect to distant data centers. An IBM Marketing Cloud study suggests 3.8 billon Internet users, or approximately 51 percent of the world’s population are accessing network data, with numbers increasing every year. Propelling this even further are the advent of the Internet of things (IoT), mobile service providers moving to 5G, and machine-to-machine communications. Supporting this unquenchable demand are fiber-optic networks and photonics technology from Lumentum.

Lumentum optical components and subsystems maximize bandwidth, enabling faster content delivery—connecting you to the information you want.
      • ADVANCED MANUFACTURING

      • Sophisticated lasers enable manufacturers to deliver next-generation products today

Raw materials—thick sheet metal, thin glass, even sapphire—are routinely transformed into products with precise requirements. High-power kilowatt lasers cut, weld, and solder metal for large components in appliances and automobiles, while ultrafast lasers achieve highly-accurate die-cutting of semiconductor wafers and the curved glass for smartphone screens. Today’s lasers accelerate workpiece processing and throughput, adhere to stringent product tolerances, and leverage the latest technology advances.

Lumentum provides a full array of laser technology that supports macromaterials processing, micromachining, biotech, and metrology.
      • 3D SENSING

      • Changing how we interact with technology, every day

Smart phones, computer tablets, automobiles, will just not be the same. We can control their actions with simple gestures, body movements, even facial recognition; it sounds like science fiction doesn’t it? Advanced lasers—specifically, diode lasers with 3D-sensing capabilities—are changing how we interact with technology every day. Virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and autonomous-driving vehicles are just a few examples of new applications on the horizon.

Lumentum has been at the forefront of this photonics technology for over 30 years. It’s a leading global 3D-sensing component manufacturer that can scale from producing thousands to millions of devices, for fluctuating consumer and industrial markets.

            • 100G/200G+ Coherent Transceivers

            • High performance for 100G/200G+ Transmission

The CFP2-ACO 100/200G coherent module utilizes a trio of indium phosphide (InP) based PICs, covering the laser, modulation, and receiver functions. Through integration, we have enabled almost complete on-wafer test of our PICs. We can automatically identify good die for assembly and map all key parameters at wafer level to maintain process control and integrity. Monolithic integration is ideally suited to support much higher levels of functionality moving forward, as we progress beyond 200G per carrier into superchannel modules.

Lumentum SDN elements represent generic optical hardware building blocks that are independently addressable and controllable through standardized interfaces, enabling rapid construction of photonic-layer solutions to meet diverse application needs (e.g. data center interconnect (DCI), open line system, and ROADM mesh-networking). Grayboxes offer a generic CPU complex (field-replaceable) that can host an OEM’s node/network control software within the box, facilitating ease-of-integration into their own proprietary network management systems (NMS) or emerging open-source SDN controllers/orchestrators. Additionally, non-proprietary hardware customization options are available on grayboxes, along with private-labelling option. The Lumentum portfolio of SDN elements is distinct and separate from our custom outsourced design manufacturing (ODM) linecard product line which caters to OEMs who require proprietary hardware solutions.
                  • Terminal Amplifier Graybox

                  • The Lumentum Terminal Amplifier Graybox and its associated Mux/Demux form the endpoint of a transport system link. It combines all necessary functions from a traditional node into a single 1RU element that is easy to deploy and easy to manage.

Optional features, including an optical channel monitor (OCM) and automatic line protection systems, can be specified when ordering.

                  • The Lumentum Optical Fiber Monitor (OFM) reduces network downtime with automated fault location.
Detecting and locating network fiber outages by conventional means is a time consuming manual process. Correlating alarms, dispatching personnel and testing may require hours of cross-disciplinary effort before a fault can be located and repair teams dispatched.

The OFM leverages Lumentum award-winning SDN optical elements platform to combine an open northbound interface for integration with existing geographic information system (GIS) and operations support system (OSS) solutions.

The OFM detects link degradation and faults over user-defined spans and thresholds and returns high-resolution fault location measurements to the network operations center. Faults are geo-located within minutes.
                  • Line Amplifier Graybox

                  • The Lumentum Line Amplifier Graybox extends your system reach beyond the single span limit of terminal amplifiers. Lumentum manufactures indium phosphide (InP) directly-modulated lasers (DMLs) in our internal wafer foundry. These DMLs are based on the distributed feedback (DFB) diode lasers. With a DFB, a distributed Bragg reflector is used to accurately lock to the desired wavelength. With the DML, the laser power is directly modulated with a current driver chipset. These are typically silicon-germanium-based high-speed electronic drivers. Lumentum offers multiple data rates and wavelengths including - 100G QSFP28 PSM4/25G SFP28 LR, 100G QSFP28 CWDM4/25G SFP28 BiDi 10 km reach, and 100G QSFP28 LR4 for use in data center applications.
                            • EMLs

                            • High-performance lasers for data center and telecom applications

Lumentum manufactures indium phosphide (InP) externally-modulated lasers (EMLs) in our internal wafer foundry. These EMLs consist of a distributed feedback (DFB) diode lasers followed by a monolithically integrated electro-absorption modulator (EAM). With a DFB, a distributed Bragg reflector is used to accurately lock to the desired wavelength. The DFB runs in a continuous wave (CW) mode. The DFB output is adjusted to achieve the appropriate output power. Then, the EAM is used to modulate the light for either the NRZ or PAM4 output as needed. Lumentum offers 25G NRZ LAN-WDM and 100G PAM4 CWDM high-performance lasers for use in data center and telecom applications.

Lumentum manufactures gallium arsenide (GaAs) vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) in our fabrication facilities. The 25G VCSELs are self-hermetic which allows them to be assembled using chip-on-board techniques for non-hermetic applications. These 850 nm VCSELs are used for the short-reach multimode fiber applications such as 100G SR4 optical modules, 25G SFP28 modules, and active optical cables (AOCs) at 25G and 100G. Lumentum performs 100% burn-in prior to shipment to ensure high reliability of these lasers.

                                                      • Optics expertise for high-reliability, high-volume components
With extensive technical and manufacturing expertise, Lumentum is a leading global source for vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). Industry-standard housing dimensions, high reliability, and excellent performance over extended operational temperatures make our VCSELs ideal for a variety of 3D sensing applications including mobile and automotive. More than 200 million Lumentum diode lasers are operating today around the world. The recorded field failure rate for this huge population of devices is less than one part per million.

Lumentum VCSELs are available in a broad range of wavelengths, output power, and architectures—customized for each application. Available wavelengths include 800-1000 nm range with power from 200 mW to 10s of watts based on customer requirements. For automotive applications, Lumentum high-power 940 nm VCSEL arrays are optimized for high-resolution flash LiDAR and in-cabin monitoring. In mobile devices, VCSELs can be used for biometric security applications.
