      • DC-Motors

      • Coreless DC motors from FAULHABER differ from conventional DC motors with iron armatures primarily due to their ironless, self-supporting copper coil with skew-wound design. Thanks to this design, the drives convince with extremely low rotor inertia, unique dynamics and without cogging, precise running. The self-supporting, ironless rotor coil with a skew-wound design – developed by the company’s founder Dr. Fritz Faulhaber senior – is the central element of every FAULHABER DC motor.

        A FAULHABER DC motor is much more than a classic DC motor. The revolutionary technology with its dynamic performance in an extremely compact and extremely low-weight form, its precision and reliability has opened up new avenues for a wide variety of application areas. From medical applications to aerospace and even factory automation and robotics, manufacturers in a wide range of industries rely on FAULHABER coreless DC motors.

        Commutations for FAULHABER DC motors
        FAULHABER DC motors are available with two different commutation systems: precious metal commutation and graphite commutation. The term “precious metal commutation” refers to the materials, consisting of high-performance precious metal alloys, which are used in the brushes and commutator. We use this commutation system for our DC motors mainly on account of its compact size, the extremely low contact resistance and the precise commutation signal. It is particularly suitable for applications with low current load, e.g. battery-powered devices. Generally, the optimum operating point of precious-metal commutated motors in the case of continuous operation under load is at or close to the point of maximum efficiency of the motor.

        The term “graphite commutation” refers to the brush material used in our DC motors in combination with a commutator made of a copper alloy. This commutation system is extremely robust and is better suited to dynamic high-performance applications with fast start/stop operation or periodic overload conditions.

        High-quality brushless motors for a long service life
        Whether it’s high torque 4-pole DC-Servomotors, highly efficient flat DC-micromotors, or compact slotless motors, FAULHABER specializes in getting the most performance out of the smallest package.

        Due to their design FAULHABER brushless motors are predestined for heavy duty servo applications with frequent overload conditions as well as for continuous duty applications where maximum operational lifetime is required.

        Brushless DC-servomotors: 2-pole or 4-pole?
        FAULHABER high precision 2-pole brushless DC servomotors are three phase ironless motors that have a wide speed and torque range. They are ideal for mid- to high-speed applications requiring smooth speed control, high efficiency, and long operational lifetimes.

        For highly dynamic servo applications requiring very high torque in the most compact dimensions, the FAULHABER BX4 and BP4 series 4-pole, DC-servomotors are ideal. Their robust design with very few parts and no glued components means that they are extremely durable and well suited for harsh ambient conditions such as extreme temperatures and high vibration and shock loads.

        High efficiency thanks to brushless motors by FAULHABER
        FAULHABER brushless flat DC-micromotors are 3-phase, slotless, axial flux gap motors with a rotating back iron. They have a much higher efficiency than other flat brushless motors and their rotating back iron provides a high rotor inertia that is ideal for applications requiring low torque ripple and very precise continuous speed control.

        FAULHABER also offers a range of 2-pole brushless motors with a cylindrical rotating back iron sometimes referred to as ironless external outrunner motors. What sets the FAULHABER motor apart is the slotless design, which eliminates the cogging torque. The high inertia of the rotor makes these motors ideal for continuous duty applications that require very precise speed control. These motors also have integrated speed control that can be configured for different speed profiles.

Our Speed Control Systems are suitable for drive systems with speed control, and our Motion Control Systems are the ideal solution for precise rotational speed control or positioning tasks. All in all, our range of motors with integrated electronics includes motors for an extremely wide variety of application scenarios in the smallest of spaces.

        Speed Control Systems
        FAULHABER Speed Control Systems are highly dynamic drive systems with controlled speed. The drive electronics are already integrated and matched to the respective motor.

        The compact integration of the Speed Controller as well as the flexible connection possibilities open a wide range of applications in areas such as laboratory technology and equipment manufacturing, automation technology, pick-and-place machines and machine tools, or pumps.

        FAULHABER motor with integrated electronics – Flexible & efficient
        The integration of the electronics in space-optimised add-on systems reduces space requirements and simplifies installation and start-up. The electronics integrated in the motor facilitate rotational speed control by means of a PI controller with external set-point specification. The direction of rotation can be changed via a separate switching input; the speed signal can be read out via the frequency output. FAULHABER motors with integrated electronics can therefore also be operated either as voltage controllers or in fixed speed mode.

        Speed Control Systems can be adapted to the application via the FAULHABER Motion Manager software. In the case of these motors with integrated electronics, the type and scaling of the set-point specification, the operating mode as well as the controller parameters can be adjusted. The USB programming adapter for Speed Controllers is used for configuration.
      • Linear DC-Servomotors

      • Exceptionally powerful
        When it comes to executing translational motions as efficiently and flexibly as possible, linear motors are generally used. Unlike rotating motors, linear motors do not produce rotating movements but rather linear movements that move in two directions. In this regard, FAULHABER linear motors open entirely new dimension for linear movements.

        The high-performance and compact linear drives consist of a solid stator housing with a coil assembly and a multi-pole magnetic forcer rod. High-power magnets help the drive achieve its extraordinary force and dynamic speed performance. The drive is typically used in areas with high acceleration, high precision and high repetition frequency. Linear motors are therefore used in many different areas and open entirely new possibilities, such as a revolution for playing the piano or an ultimately precise microscope scanning stage, where a high accuracy can be decisive. The possibilities to use linear motors are almost endless.

        Perfect position control
        FAULHABER technology combines the speed and robustness of a pneumatic system with the flexibility and reliability features of an electro-mechanical linear motor. The innovative design with a 3-phase self-supporting coil and non-magnetic metal housing offers outstanding performance. The absence of residual static force and the excellent relationship between the linear force and current make the linear motors ideal for use in micro-positioning applications. Position control of the linear DC servomotors can easily be realised using the integrated Hall sensors.

      • Stepper Motors

      • for demanding positioning tasks
        For demanding positioning tasks that require a high level of accuracy, stepper motors are generally used. The name comes from the operating principle, as the stepper motors are driven by an electromagnetic field. This turns the rotor a small angle – a step – or a multiple thereof.

        Robust assembly, high speed range, and exceptional performance in even the harshest environments make FAULHABER drive systems the perfect solution for demanding positioning applications. The stepper motors from FAULHABER are also characterised by a long service life and high reliability hanks to their electronic commutation (motor without brush).

        They are available with a wide variety of modular servo components such as encoders, zero backlash gearheads or integrated lead screws.

        Two-phase stepper motors
        The rotor of a two-phase stepper motor consists of a plastic carrier in which the magnets are specially arranged so as to produce 10 to 12 pole pairs, depending on the motor version.

        The large magnet volume guarantees a high torque. The quality of the magnet material enables use from very low temperatures and temperatures up to 180°C (special version). Two windings are used for the stators, one per phase. They are positioned on each side of the rotor. The inner and outer stator assemblies produce a radial magnetic field

        The rotor of a two-phase stepper motor with disc magnet consists of a thin, homogeneous disc.

        The very low inertia enables high acceleration values. The disc is magnetised precisely with 10 pole pairs, resulting in a high angular accuracy. The stator is only located on one side of the motor. Four windings (two per phase) generate the axial magnetic field.

        Special versions of this motor type are well suited for use in microstep applications as there is no cogging torque.

        Stepper motors – two-phase permanent magnet technology
        The FAULHABER stepper motors are multi-pole, two-phase motors with permanent magnets. Through the use of rare-earth magnets, an exceptionally high power to volume ratio is achieved. With its very low inertia, the rotor design predestines the motors for use in applications that require very high accelerations or rapid change of direction. Another important advantage is that they can start with a relative high speed right from the very first step, further shortening the time required for the acceleration ramp. With their short length and low weight, stepper motors can also be used in integrated systems.

        Thanks to their robust design and simple operation, they are likewise ideally suited for the most difficult operating conditions. Due to the various operating possibilities of the full-, half- or microstep electronics, precise speed and motion control can be established in an open control loop.
      • Piezo motors

      • During the 1980s, the founders of PiezoMotor AB, Professor Stefan Johansson and Dr Mats Bexell started their research on micro motion systems. After almost ten years of research, they were awarded the Swedish Innovation Cup and the ”Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow” prize for their new rotating piezoelectric motor. The motor was the world’s smallest and strongest motor built to date. A Piezo LEGS motor is precise down to the nanometer range, has instant response time and does not suffer from backlash problems.

        PiezoMotor AB developed the basis of the linear piezo motor that eventually led to the first product – Piezo LEGS. In 2002, the first shipments to customers were launched and growth continues across markets .

        In 2007, PiezoMotor AB started a collaboration agreement with the FAULHABER GROUP making the FAULHABER GROUP a shareholder in the company.

        Piezo motors are available as linear version or as rotary version:

        Piezo LEGS Linear motors
        This linear Piezo LEGS motor is ideally suited for move and hold applications where precision, minimal space, low energy consumption and simple construction are required.

        Piezo LEGS Rotary motors
        This Piezo LEGS rotary motor is intended for a large range of applications where high speed dynamics and positioning with precision is crucial. High torque output in a small package is also beneficial.
      • Precision Gearheads

      • FAULHABER developes high performance modular gearheads to complement each of its motor technologies.

        From high torque planetary technology in a variety materials, to zero backlash spur gears, FAULHABER has the right solution.
      • Linear Components

      • When combined with lead screws, stepper motors provide a high accuracy linear positioning system that provides the benefits of a stepper (open loop control, long life, high torque density, etc.).
      • Encoders

      • For higher positioning and speed control, FAULHABER provides a wide range of encoders to combine with the complete portfolio of FAULHABER DC-, brushless, and stepper motors. In the area of encoders, FAULHABER offers 2- and 3-channel incremental magnetic and optical encoders with standard quadrature resolution from 16 to up to 10,000 pulses per revolution or single-turn absolute encoders with a resolution of up to 4,096 steps.

        FAULHABER encoders: Optical encoders
        Optical encoders are characterised by a very high position and repeat accuracy as well as a very high signal quality due to the precise measuring element. Furthermore, they are insensitive to magnetic interference.

        In optical encoders, a code disc with a measuring element is used that is attached to the shaft of the motor. A distinction is made here between reflective and transmissive optical encoders.

        Reflective encoders
        With reflective encoders, the light from an LED is reflected by the reflective surface of the code disc and collected by photodetectors. Reflective optical encoders are especially compact since the LED, the photodetectors and the electronics can be mounted on the same circuit board or even on the same chip. For these reasons, FAULHABER primarily uses reflective optical encoders.

        Transmissive encoders
        Transmissive encoders make use of the transmitted light process. Here, the light from the LED passes through slits in the code disc and is collected by photodetectors on the other side of the code disc.

        FAULHABER encoders: Magnetic encoders
        Magnetic encoders are especially insensitive to dust, humidity and thermal or mechanical shock. In magnetic encoders from FAULHABER, sensors are used that determine the changes of the magnetic field. The magnetic field is changed by the movement of a magnetic object. This can be the magnet of the motor or an additional sensor magnet with a defined measuring element that is attached to the shaft of the motor.

        Using magnetic encoders, an additional sensor magnet is usually necessary. In case of integrated digital or analogue Hall sensors, however, the movement of the rotor magnet in the motor can be measured directly. With integrated Hall sensors, such as nearly all FAULHABER Brushless DC-motors have, there is generally no additional sensor magnet is necessary.

        Digital Hall sensors for magnetic encoders
        The term sensor refers to digital or analogue Hall sensors which, in case of the FAULHABER Brushless DC-Motors, are usually mounted directly on the motor circuit board. Digital Hall sensors are used primarily for the commutation of the Brushless DC-Motors and for simple speed control. Nearly all FAULHABER brushless DC-Motors are equipped by default with three integrated digital Hall sensors and are thus ideally suited for use in combination with incremental encoders from FAULHABER.

        A comparison of analogue Hall sensors and encoders
        Analogue Hall sensors are an economical, simple and compact alternative to encoders. Due to the higher resolution, these can also be used for exact rotational speed or position control. For the analogue Hall sensors option from FAULHABER please refer to “Controller combinations” directly in the motors’ data sheets under this selection, no encoder is necessary. If you opt for an analogue Hall sensor, it is recommended that the sensor will be operated with FAULHABER Controllers, which are perfectly laid out for the analogue Hall signals.
