At a new spare parts center operated by a leading German agricultural technology manufacturer, ek robotics, a NEURA brand, demonstrates how automated guided vehicles can deliver high-performance intralogistics even in extremely limited spaces. The implemented AGV system ensures reliable material flow between storage, picking, and consolidation areas while addressing growing challenges such as labor shortages and rising cost pressures.

Automated Material Flow in a High-Bay Warehouse Environment

The spare parts center includes an automatic high-bay warehouse with around 21,600 storage locations. Ten X MOVE transport platforms handle goods transport between the warehouse transfer stations and downstream picking and consolidation zones. Designed for continuous two-shift operation, the system ensures stable throughput and consistent availability, forming the backbone of daily intralogistics operations.

Compact AGVs Designed for Heavy Loads

The X MOVE 1200 transport robots are equipped with lifting beams capable of handling loads of up to 1,200 kilograms. They transport pallets and mesh boxes along a 300-meter route, navigating using contour-based guidance supported by reflectors. Their compact design allows them to operate efficiently in narrow aisles and restricted areas without compromising throughput or safety.

Simulation-Driven Planning for Long-Term Performance

A key factor in the project’s success was early material flow simulation. Before implementation, scenarios exceeding 200 transports per hour were modeled to validate performance under future demand conditions. This data-driven planning approach ensured scalability, high system availability, and long-term operational reliability, supporting decades of use with predictable performance.

Proven Reliability Through Reference Projects

The customer’s decision was further reinforced by a reference visit to an existing ek robotics installation at Rittal in Haiger, Germany. This demonstrated the provider’s end-to-end competence, from system design and simulation to vehicle deployment, software integration, and lifecycle support. The combination of robust technology and practical experience reduced risk and improved total cost of ownership.

Enabling Scalable and Digital Intralogistics

In daily operation, the AGV fleet supplies picking and consolidation areas with precise timing and automatically transfers goods to and from the high-bay warehouse. The validated transport capacity ensures reliable processes even during peak demand periods. As a result, the system lays a strong foundation for future digitalization and expansion initiatives within the customer’s intralogistics strategy.
