Baumüller, the specialist for drive and automation systems, presented its solutions for electric and hybrid drive systems for construction machinery at bauma, the world’s largest trade fair for construction machinery, which took place in Munich from October 24 to 30, 2022.

With its wide service range from motors, converters, and control units to diagnostic and remote maintenance software, Baumüller offers future-looking hybrid and fully electric drive solutions for mobile machinery and commercial vehicles. Baumüller Anlagen-Systemtechnik is responsible for the design and engineering of the innovative drive concepts for the mobile machines and implements them from a single source.

Environmentally friendly and powerful alternative to combustion engines

Hybrid or electric work machines already represent a practical alternative to vehicles with combustion engines. With their dynamic and powerful driving performance, hybrid and electric vehicles offer additional advantages, such as reduced maintenance costs, optimized control of driving behavior or attachments, and minimal noise emissions. With fully electric vehicles, optimized charging concepts also enable practical operating times. Baumüller offers the entire performance spectrum from hybrid and fully electric traction systems to the electrification of auxiliary units.

Traction systems – flexibly adapted to the specific requirements

Baumüller offers two variants for traction systems: Depending on the demands placed on the machine’s autonomy on the building site and the required power input during operation, construction machinery can be equipped with a battery-powered drive or a diesel-electric hybrid system. The high starting torque increases driving comfort for the user. Recuperating braking energy allows for particularly economical operation.

There are also practical drive concepts for stationary applications with lower mobility requirements. Horizontal or vertical drilling machines, for example, can be operated from the building site power supply, with the integrated high-voltage battery covering any peak loads. Autonomy on the building site is ensured by a small power unit.

Auxiliary units – servo-hydraulics increase efficiency

These include electrically driven hydraulic pumps for working hydraulics or electric power take-offs (ePTOs). Low-noise and low-emission driving and working are just two of the numerous advantages.

The drives are space-optimized and can be integrated flexibly. Electric, decentralized auxiliary drives can selectively switch on the pressure and flow rate through efficient servo-hydraulics and control the needs-specific pump output.

Charging systems for hybrid and fully electric construction machinery

The building site of the future requires a high-performance charging infrastructure for electrically powered construction machinery. The fast-charging systems implemented by Baumüller from a single source can be used during breaks or overnight, thus further increasing the flexibility for machine operators.

Drive solutions for commercial vehicles

Especially for the commercial vehicle sector, Baumüller offers the drive concept powerMELA®, which was developed in cooperation with Sensor-Technik Wiedemann. The system consists of a permanent magnet synchronous motor and an integrated four-quadrant frequency converter and covers power ratings of up to 140 kW.

The powerMELA® can be used for hybrid or fully electric drive systems. In the hybrid concept, a DC voltage is generated in the vehicle electrical system by a combustion engine using a combination of generator and frequency converter. With all-electric solutions, operation is exclusively by battery current. The electric motors are connected to the on-board power supply and drive the vehicle. Fuel savings of up to 30 percent can be achieved with these drive variants. The powerMELA® is suitable for use in road rollers, milling machines, loaders, excavators, and farm and wheel loaders.

A further highlight at bauma 2022 was drive solutions for smaller mobile applications. The b maXX mobil with IP66 degree of protection, for example, can both drive the vehicle and regenerate energy in four-quadrant operation. For mobile use, the water-cooled controller is shock- and vibration-resistant. It can also be used at temperatures between -25° and +65° Celsius.

In combination with compact liquid-cooled servo motors of type DSP1 and DSD2 with degree of protection IP65, which impress with their high power density and a broad speed control range, they can be used even under extreme temperatures – ideal for mobile machines such as wheel loaders or construction vehicles.
