Baumüller has integrated its permanent magnet synchronous motor, which has been used as part of the powerMELA® drive solution for mobile drive technology for years, into its b maXX 5000 controller concept. PowerMELA® was designed in cooperation with Sensor-Technik Wiedemann GmbH. The motor is available in performance classes 80 and 140 kW and generates reluctance momentum in addition to electromagnetic torque, making use of the Lorentz force. By using it with the b maXX 5000, both torques – i.e. both the electromagnetic and the reluctance momentum – can be used, making optimised operation and high power density possible.

The new solution is of interest to all applications in which high performance is required despite restricted installation space and as well as a high flow temperature of the cooling medium and when it is possible to install the electronic components in a separate switch cabinet. Thermal power stations, harbour vehicles, ship drives or cranes are just some of the applications that profit from the characteristics of the new drive package.

Very high efficiency

Due to its special construction, the motor has an unusually high power density, thanks to the special integration of the magnets and the innovative cooling concept with direct conductor cooling. It has a constant output up to twice the basic speed and a high torque in the basic speed range. The very high motor efficiency makes energy-efficient drive dimensioning and more compact heat exchanger design possible. With its robust design, this motor in the protection class up to IP69K is also suitable for applications under harsh environmental conditions.

With the b maXX 5000, which can be used for outputs of up to 315 kW, Baumüller now provides a future-proof controller concept for this strong motor. To ensure optimal safety, Baumüller provides an integrated safety concept for the inverter, with three different safety modules. The b maXX 5000 is available in seven sizes and comes with air, water and cold-plate cooling systems that can be operated with the user-friendly and hot-plug-capable control panel and for which additional field buses are optionally available in addition to EtherCAT and CANopen.
