Baumüller, the drive and automation specialist in Nuremberg, assists the shredder manufacturer WEIMA with the development of electric shredders. As a specialist for electric drives with high performance, Baumüller offers high-torque electric drives that enable a reduction in the energy consumption of the shredders by up to 30 percent.

Partnership for high performance

The company WEIMA Maschinenbau GmbH, based in the German town of Ilsfeld in the State of Baden Württemberg, has specialized in machines installations for reducing the size of and compacting raw materials. Baumüller and WEIMA have already implemented various series and versions of shredders, further projects are currently being planned. The most important criteria are high machine availability and high throughput with the lowest possible energy consumption.

Many advantages result from doing without the hydraulic drive, for example, in the current WEIMA single- shaft shredder WKS 2200: The number of wearing parts is reduced, since susceptible components such as hydraulic hoses and the hydraulic motor are no longer necessary. In addition, an enormous amount of energy can be saved and the noise level is also reduced. “The greatest advantage is the energy efficiency of the motor. It is also very easy to control. And we have the advantage that the torque increases with reducing speed, which suits the size reduction process very well and is an enormous advantage”, explains project manager Stefan Reuß.

As a partner, Baumüller assists the shredder specialist WEIMA with the implementation of customized solutions with its know-how in the drive concept, automation and networking with other components within a treatment line.

Baumüller offers torque motors with a torque range from 325 Nm up to a peak torque of 60,000 Nm including the suitable electronics. With customized adjustments, the robustness of the motors can be adapted to the requirements of the most sophisticated applications. The torque motors are available with different shaft options and also as a kit version, and are therefore particularly flexible for integration in the machine.

Based in Nuremberg, Baumüller is a leading manufacturer of electric drive and automation systems. At production sites in Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and China as well as in over 40 branches worldwide, around 1,900 employees develop and produce intelligent system solutions for machine manufacturing and e-mobility. In addition, the range of services offered by the Baumüller Group includes engineering, assembly and industrial relocation as well as services, thus covering all aspects of life cycle management.
