ELK selected cantilever racks from OHRA for its warehouse expansion

The company ELK, one of the leading suppliers of prefabricated houses in Europe, has expanded its storage capacity for heavy glulam beams at its production site in Planá nad Lužnicí in the Czech republic. Thanks to the stable construction of the cantilever racks from OHRA the heavy beams can now be stored on four levels, while the cantilever columns also support the roof construction – a cost-effective and quickly realisable alternative to the construction of a conventional warehouse.

Due to the growth in business the existing warehouses no longer provided sufficient storage capacity for the wood products and other articles required for the production of the prefabricated house components. The company decided to generate the additionally required warehousing space through the erection of an external rack system.

ELK chose cantilever racks from OHRA for this purpose. The company, with headquarters in Kerpen, Germany, is the European market leader for cantilever racks and has specialised in rack systems for the timber and building materials trade. An important reason for ELK to employ racks from OHRA was the stability and quality of the construction: All the load-bearing components of the cantilever racks are manufactured from solid-walled, hot-rolled steel. The profiles can yield elastically in the event of collisions, thus maintaining their statical properties. The stable construction enables greater storage heights as well as bearing loads and therefore a higher storage capacity. However, above all, the columns can support a roof construction. OHRA only supplied the warehouse’s rack construction – the roof was built by the prefabricated house experts ELK. Thus a weather-protected storage area was created in just a week at a considerably lower cost than the building of a conventional warehouse.

Today a total of three 15 meter long rows of racks respectively, each with an overlapping roof construction, provide sufficient space for heavy glulam and DUO beams. The racks are 5 meters high and are equipped with four storage levels enabling an optimal use of the available space. The height of the storage levels can be simply adjusted to current needs as the cantilever arms are hung into the stands in a 100 millimetre grid, not screwed or welded. Thus the arms can be adjusted without the use of tools – another reason for ELK to choose the racks from OHRA.
