HAPex and Ohras Safe, Flexible and Efficient Storage of Wood Products

The HAPex s.r.o., one of the biggest importers of timber and wood products in the Czech Republic, has expanded its distribution warehouse with rack systems from OHRA. The cantilever racking won the day with its flexibility and high load bearing capacity. Through the installation of racking both inside and outside it was not only possible to significantly increase storage capacity but also enhance the picking times and controlling of the stored goods.

In Hradec Králové HAPex operates one of the largest distribution warehouses for wood products in the Czech Republic from where they supply carpenters and the wood processing industry with window scantlings, glued laminated timber, OSB board, wood mouldings, construction timber and outdoor decking, amongst other products. Flourishing trade and a growing product range necessitated an expansion of the existing warehouse. The goal, on the one side, was to increase storage capacity. On the other side, the diverse range of formats and materials required an optimisation of the storage and retrieval process, which was also designed to improve storage safety.

Consequently, HAPex decided to expand the warehouse with systems from OHRA, the European market leader for cantilever racking. Back in 2010 the company had already equipped the existing inside warehouse with racking from OHRA. Amongst other things it was the flexible cantilever arms slotted into a 100 mm grid in the stands which proved convincing. They can be adjusted without the use of tools and the racking can be quickly tailored to the dimensions of the items to be stored. In addition, the suspended arms deflect in the event of knocks, thus avoiding damage to the racking as well as the goods.

All the load-bearing components of the racking are manufactured from solid-walled, hot-rolled steel. Thanks to this construction the racking retains its statical properties even when accidentally rammed. In addition, high load bearing capacities – at HAPex 1,000 kilogram per arm – a slim construction and associated high floor space utilisation are possible. Storage flexibility is also increased at HAPex through the equipping of the cantilever arms with wooden shelves. This results in a continuous storage area without disruptive intermediary supports.

For the expansion of the existing warehouse HAPex decided to install new racking in the outside area with a total length of 52 meters, a height of 4,500 millimetres and four storage levels. In order to protect them from the weather the racking was equipped with a roof. Here the stands simultaneously function as a supporting construction for the roof – an economical alternative to the construction of a new warehouse.
