Lapp ÖLFLEX® CONNECT SERVO servo assemblies

Lapp is reinventing servo cable assemblies. At this year’s Hannover Messe, the Lapp Group will present ÖLFLEX® CONNECT SERVO, a newly developed generation of servo assemblies that will make connection solutions for electrical drives around the world better and more varied. This product is world first and represents a significant expansion of Lapp’s product range in this sector. The Stuttgart-based manufacturer of integrated cabling solutions is to introduce successive variants for all common drive standards. All variants are available in a wide range of plug sizes, from M15 to M58, and in cable diameters of 1.5mm² to 10mm². Customers can also choose between three performance classes: Basic Line, Core Line and Extended Line. With this expanded product portfolio, Lapp is responding to a range of user requirements and offers the right solution for all conceivable application scenarios. A further advantage for customers is the shielding against electromagnetic interferences, which has been measurably improved compared to previous solutions.

Lapp developed its own new servo cables to achieve the technical benefits and increased process stability in production. Partner company Intercontec was involved from the start in the development process, developing suitable connectors in close cooperation with Lapp. Together with the new servo cables and manufacturing process, they form a full system whose parts complement each other. The cables and connection systems are processed to form a new generation of servo assemblies. This automated process was also developed by Lapp. The ÖLFLEX® CONNECT SERVO assemblies will initially be produced at the company’s main facility in Stuttgart starting in June 2015. Lapp will then construct specialised production facilities in Asia and North America to produce the new solutions in the same high quality.

Machinery and plant construction firms are increasingly switching to electric drives, as these offer greater efficiency and more precise control. This leads to increased demand and more stringent requirements. “As a globally active cable manufacturer with particular expertise in assemblies, we are in a great position to satisfy the demands of this growing market”, says Member of the Board Georg Stawowy. According to Stawowy, Lapp is the only manufacturer that can provide this depth of production in servo assemblies across three continents. Lapp places particular emphasis on being able to offer the same standard of quality to its global customers, wherever they are. Alongside the high component quality, Stawowy sees a particular technical advantage over previous servo assemblies in the 360° shield covering against electromagnetic interferences. This is made possible thanks to a newly developed automated manufacturing process that removes the sheathing from the cable, gently spreads the shielding and creates an all-round contact to the new connection system. The company claims this makes its electromagnetic shielding measurably better.

Whether in Asia, North America or Europe, the new process for assembly production will allow a degree of automation that will lead to higher process stability and, consequently, higher quality.

With the automated cable assembly production, the Lapp Group is responding to the trend towards “plug and produce” in the manufacturing sector. Increasing numbers of customers are no longer looking to buy cable by the metre, but instead want pre-assembled systems consisting of cables and connectors. In some cases, these are also required pre-installed in an integration-capable assembly system (drag chain).

ÖLFLEX® CONNECT SERVO will initially be available from June with Siemens-standard connectors. This will be followed by seven further connector types to cover all common industrial standards.
