When fitting out its new branch in Neumünster, building materials retailer Henri Benthack deliberately chose cantilever and pallet racking made from hot-rolled steel profiles. Compared to systems constructed from cold-rolled sheet metal, these racks offer significantly higher load capacities and larger spans, while also being more durable in daily operation. Even after accidental impacts, they maintain their structural integrity. OHRA supplied the complete racking solution for the new site – including cantilever and pallet racks for indoor and outdoor areas, as well as special long-span and vertical racks for storing and displaying mouldings.
In mid-2024, Henri Benthack moved into its new Neumünster branch after the previous premises could no longer accommodate its extensive product portfolio. The new location offers over 25,000 square metres of display space, enabling the company to present a significantly expanded range of around 8,500 products – from flooring materials to tiling, landscaping, and roofing supplies.
Based on the company’s experience with sheet-metal shelving at its previous site, Benthack opted for OHRA’s heavy-duty systems this time. OHRA, a leading supplier in this segment, manufactures exclusively from full-walled, hot-rolled steel profiles. This allows for high load-bearing capacities with a slim design. At Benthack, for instance, the 7-metre-high pallet racks can support up to 3.9 tonnes per shelf, each spanning 3 metres in width.
Hot-rolled profiles also offer major safety advantages. In shelving made from cold-rolled sheet metal, even a minor collision with a forklift can severely damage supports or beams – sometimes beyond repair or without immediate visibility. Hot-rolled steel, by contrast, is ductile and resilient thanks to its manufacturing process. It is far more resistant to kinks and impacts, and in the event of a collision, it may deform slightly but retains its load-bearing properties within safe limits.
The double-row pallet racking system at Benthack provides around 3,400 storage spaces in total. The cantilever racks, with six storage levels, add up to over 1,250 metres of storage length. All outdoor racks are hot-dip galvanised, and several cantilever systems are equipped with roofing for weather protection. The vertical racks were tailored precisely to Benthack’s moulding assortment in both height and usable depth, allowing products to be clearly displayed and easily accessed.
To ensure a clear overview of the extensive racking installation, OHRA created a comprehensive visualisation of the entire system for Benthack’s internal planning. In cooperation with the project architect, this enabled error-free coordination of the floor slab design, including external drainage channels. The structured planning process resulted in a well-organised storage facility with greater capacity, faster order picking, and significantly reduced material damage compared to the previous site.
