Silverlake Automotive Recycling in Hampshire stores cars, SUVs, and vans in OHRA cantilever racks to ensure maximum direct access to end-of-life vehicles at all times. The racks, exceeding 8 metres in height, allow up to five vehicles weighing 2 tonnes each to be safely stacked. Guide rails along the rack rows enable storage and retrieval with a side loader, keeping the aisles narrow and allowing for a higher density of shelving. As a result, Silverlake can accommodate approximately 2,500 end-of-life vehicles on site.
Silverlake Automotive Recycling recycled over 81,000 spare parts from end-of-life vehicles in 2024 – the equivalent of around 34,668 cars and vans being recycled. Efficient processes are needed to achieve these figures. This also includes the safe and space-saving storage of the vehicles. Silverlake therefore decided to install a total of 19 cantilever racks from OHRA. The racks, which are over 8 metres high, can store up to 2 tonnes of end-of-life vehicles on 5 storage levels. The 2 metre long cantilever arms can be flexibly adjusted up or down in increments of 100 millimetres. The patented suspension system of the cantilever arms means that no tools are required for adjustment. This allows Silverlake to quickly adjust the height of the storage levels, for example to store vans or SUVs.
For Alan Prebble, Managing Director of Silverlake, it wasn’t just the high storage capacity that the shelving makes possible that was an argument in favour of OHRA. The rigid and robust construction of the shelving made of full-walled, hot-rolled steel profiles was also convincing – this means that the shelving can withstand the rough everyday working conditions on the car recycler’s premises.
