RFID Authentication with VisuNet HMI Systems for Advanced IT Security by PEPPERL+FUCHS

Increasing regulatory requirements, especially in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, pose particular challenges for companies. These areas require increased IT security with unique user identification and secure access controls. With the optional integrated RFID readers for the modular VisuNet HMI systems, Pepperl+Fuchs offers a powerful solution for authentication that can be used reliably in both GMP-regulated environments and hazardous areas.

Normative standards, such as the Cyber Resilience Act, Annex 11 of the EU GMP guidelines, and IEC 62443, are tightening the requirements for authentication systems for HMIs in pharmaceutical production. Among other things, restrictive user management, access restrictions, and—depending on the risk profile—multi-factor authentication are required. For operating personnel, this means that passwords alone are no longer sufficient.

The VisuNet GXP and VisuNet FLX series operator workstations from Pepperl+Fuchs offer a practical and future-oriented solution for secure authentication directly in the field. Users can quickly and clearly log in, using optional integrated RFID readers, for example with their factory or employee ID card. The VisuNet FLX is certified for Zone 2/22 and Div. 2, while the VisuNet GXP is certified for Zone 1/21. The technology is based on the RFID20 module from Pepperl+Fuchs, which supports common standards such as Mifare and Legic. In addition, the RFID20 component is compatible with leading identification and authentication systems such as PM-Logon from Siemens, LogOnPlus from Obion, and the Connected Worker Platform from Nymi.

Adaptable Security: Up to Multi-Factor Authentication

The authentication concept can be expanded depending on the application and security requirements. In addition to classic RFID login, a combination with a password or PIN is also possible. This two-factor authentication offers an improved security standard when higher security levels are required.

Multi-factor authentication, which often relies on a combination with biometric identification, goes one step further. For example, the Nymi Band enables biometric identification of the user via fingerprint, ensuring extended and multi-level authentication. This creates a consistent and secure authentication process for GMP-regulated processes with strict requirements for traceability and data integrity.

Seamless Integration Into Existing Structures

With VisuNet HMI systems with integrated RFID readersRFID logins can be fully integrated into existing product workflows and IT environments. In combination with the VisuNet RM Shell thin client firmware and the VisuNet Control Center management software, central managementofall devices ispossible. In addition, the devices can be connected to a domain (e.g., Active Directory), allowing user accounts to be managed centrally and access rights to be controlled via group policies—an ideal combination of cybersecurity, ease of use, and regulatory compliance.
