26 new overhead cranes ensure high efficiency in the new production hall of Schwäbische Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH. The manufacturer of horizontal, multi-spindled processing centres from Waldmössingen relies on its long-term partner HAISCH KRAN e.K from Eschenbach in all matters concerning cranes and lifting technology. Together with the architect Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Peter Motzer, the team around Dipl.-Ing (FH) Peter Haisch and Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Tobias Rehm, both crane experts, developed a tailor-made handling solution for the complex new construction of the hall. Here it was important to meet all the requirements of Schwäbische Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH whilst developing a competitive solution. This was achieved by the crane construction experts thanks to their many years of experience and the use of crane components by SWF Krantechnik GmbH.

The crane systems were all manufactured with CraneKit component packs by SWF Krantechnik. The flexible design of the construction components made it possible to construct single-girder overhead cranes with top and side connection, jacked-up single-girder overhead cranes and also double-girder overhead cranes with top connection. All crane systems are radio controlled with 2.4 GHz technology. This provides the crane operators with increased safety during load handling. They are not restricted by a control cable to being near the crane but are able to move freely and thus have an optimum view of the crane’s movement at all times.

Frequency inverter controlled electric motors provide the necessary power to the crane bridges and hoists. Here the so-called A-motors are used for the hoisting movement. They have the advantage of resulting in an increased speed in the case of smaller loads. This reduces the production time significantly and increases productivity. In the case of heavy loads it is however also possible to use gentle and precise handling, which considerably contributes to the safe handling of the valuable end product. As well as time, the innovative motor technology saves the operator the corresponding energy costs. Additionally, the gentle crane and crab movements result in a longer lifetime of the wear parts, e.g. the drive breaks, which has a positive effect on the maintenance costs.

An additional feature in the new production hall are the stacked crane runways. The four double-girder overhead cranes with respectively 40t or 10t load capacity operate on the upper crane runway. The compact size of the electric wire rope hoists NOVA by SWF Krantechnik contribute to optimum use of space. Architect Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Peter Motzer was thus able to plan for a relatively low hall ceiling height, which had a positive effect on the construction and operating costs. The single-girder overhead cranes with respectively 5t or 2t load capacity operate on the lower crane runway. Again the short construction type of the electric wire rope hoists NOVA results in an optimum hoist height. An energy chain provides power to the hoists. Compared to the usual flat cable, this has the advantage of there being no cable loops underneath the bridge that are in the way when driving over obstacles or lower cranes.

In detail, the following cranes were manufactured and put into operation by HAISCH KRAN:

In the two hall bays:

  • two 40t double-girder overhead cranes with a span of 18.16m and 7.5m lifting height
  • two 10t double-girder overhead cranes with a span of 18.16m and 8.5m lifting height
  • four 5t single-girder overhead cranes with a span of 18.32m and 5.5m lifting height

two 2t single-girder overhead cranes with a span of 18.32m and 5.6m lifting height

In the three clocked productions

  • Six 5t single-girder overhead cranes with a span of 6.75m and 5.5m lifting height
  • three 2t single-girder overhead cranes with a span of 6.75m and 5.5m lifting height

In the pre-assembly

  • four 5t single-girder overhead cranes with a span of 9.5m and 4.6m lifting height
  • two 2t single-girder overhead cranes with a span of 9.5m and 4.6m lifting height

In the small parts production

  • one 5t single-girder overhead crane with a span of 13.89m and 3.66m lifting height

The establishment of a further clocked production station is already planned. The crane experts of HAISCH KRAN will also look after the crane systems in future and provide the service for the efficient production assistants.
