The Demag SafeControl system allows a new level of flexibility in crane control. It creates the conditions for two universal cranes (and up to four trolleys) to be operated with a single radio control system. This enables convenient, ergonomic and safe tandem control in various operating modes.

Sometimes it takes two: when handling large-volume or heavy components, indoor cranes can operate in tandem. However, this requires a high level of skill on the part of the crane operators and optimum coordination between them – or two Demag universal cranes with the Demag smart SafeControl system. Because these two cranes can be operated with a single radio control if required.

This is made possible by the safety control unit developed in-house, which not only monitors and controls all relevant motions of the crane assigned to it – it can also perform additional tasks. This feature allows a single control unit to control all the motions of two cranes. It is easy to link the operating functions via a common radio control system.

Tandem operation in practice: in ‘normal mode’, two cranes can be used independently of each other as individual units. It is also possible to use individual hoists. If both cranes need to work in tandem, the operator can take control of both cranes with one of the two radio controls and can control up to four trolleys. As options, either one of the two cranes can be operated separately (A or B) or both cranes in parallel (A and B). Switchover between these modes can be done easily by means of a selector switch on the radio controller. Since the safety control system can also detect and evaluate the simultaneous motions of two cranes, all safety requirements for crane operation (Performance Level c or d and Category 2 to EN ISO 13849) are fulfilled for the intended use.

The functionality of tandem control goes even further. In smart-tandem mode, two cranes with up to four trolleys can be controlled synchronously – even with a single radio control system – to transport particularly bulky and heavy loads. Perfect synchronisation of motions at the control level enables highly precise handling with ergonomic, concentrated crane operation and thus safe handling of the load.
