Baumüller utilizes a test-bench to analyse its high-torque technology

In Helmond, Netherlands, in the Brainport Region economic hub of Eindhoven, a test bench for trucks, buses and trailers with Baumüller high-torque technology has been operational since this year. In the framework of the Automotive Campus Shared Facilities, the test bench is part of four high-tech testing facilities that can be used by scientists and companies.

Curve handling simulation

Load and stress tests on vehicles of different sizes can be performed on two rolls each with a diameter of 3 meters. Primarily, the consequences of vibrations are analyzed which can be simulated on the test bench.

The two rolls are powered by two Baumüller high-torque-motors from the DST2 series. High-torque technology was selected since the full torque is available starting at zero speed, the compact dimensions and it is maintenance-free because there is no gearbox. The DST2 series motors are characterized by an especially high torque above 15,000 Nm and provide outputs of up to 245 kW. The motors are equipped with a water cooling system and allow speeds up to 180 rpm which is comparable to a driving speed of 100 km/h. The drives power the test vehicles wheels via the two roller wheels. Every drive powers an axis side so curve driving can be simulated during which the speeds on both sides of an axis are generally not the same.

In order to fulfill the current requirements for energy efficiency, the options for recovering energy should also be utilized. During the braking process, the engines therefore function as generators and released energy is fed back into the grid.

The roller wheels themselves are installed on a suspension mount in a 5.5 m deep pit which stands on a seismic mass of 800 tons. To prevent the transfer of vibrations to the environment, the seismic mass is hung on springs. In total, the impressive test bench is 20 meters long and 13 meters wide and can be flexibly adapted to different vehicle sizes.
