ECOdraulics- sustainable engineering and work processes by Bucher Hydraulics

Bucher Hydraulics is rising to the challenge to strive towards an ecological present and future thus has summarized this endeavor with ECOdraulics.

Our customers are faced with an increasing number of new environment and safety requirements relative to their products. Bucher Hydraulics attaches great importance to good business partnerships and has therefore tackled this issue vigorously. With ECOdraulics, Bucher Hydraulics provides its customer base with an appropriate concept and component selection.

In a clearly laid out manner, ECOdraulics incorporates all of Bucher Hydraulics’ products, manufacturing processes, and services that in the broadest sense support sustainable engineering and work processes.

Energy conservation is a really important aspect, but ECOdraulics goes a lot further than that. Sustainable resource utilization and reduced emissions are on the same level.

Internal conversions optimizing and adapting manufacturing processes also play a significant role, for example in utilizing heat lost to keep buildings warm, not forgetting the effects of “Minergie”, Switzerland’s standard for low energy consumption in buildings.

Like every idea, ECOdraulics starts off as a concept and continues with everyone acting in a tangible and really deliberate way.

Products which Bucher Hydraulics explicitly designates as ECOdraulics items are subjected to an internal evaluation process and are only classified
as ECOdraulics products if they have a verifiable ecological benefit. The customer may rest assured that by using an ECOdraulics product he will be way above market standards in terms of environmental impact.

Our products comply with at least one of the following criteria:

  • Reduced energy consumption
  • Lower emissions, such as noise or lost heat
  • Protection of the environment
  • Optimization through system design

Having an optimal system design, is just as important as having the right product. Bucher Hydraulics thinks proactively on behalf of the customer – ensuring that the jointly set-up total project package is harmonious and the idea behind ECOdraulics is implemented in an efficient way. Bucher Hydraulics’ development departments work out customized solutions that are convincing in terms of compact construction, energy efficiency, and durability in the full sense of ECOdraulics.

An impressive example is the use of frequency-controlled QXM drives instead of proportional valve technology in press brakes. This will reduce energy consumption by up to 60% compared with conventional hydraulic controls. Hydraulic no-load losses are eliminated and the drive is considerably quieter. The reduction in heat loss associated with this brings about an 80% reduction in the volume of oil in the tank and prolongs the life of both components and hydraulic fluids.

The same technological approach applied to elevators of the ORION Alpha class. The design ensures that only the amount of hydraulic energy necessary is generated that the drive actually requires. Furthermore, using accumulators creates a regeneration effect that lowers energy consumption. The higher initial investment costs are quickly recovered in more frequently used elevators, like the ones at railway stations or airports.

Energy regeneration is also one of the benefits of the RCS range of pipe-rupture valves suitable for typical cylinder functions in construction machines, conserving almost 20% of the energy requirement in practice. The discharge stream flow from a piston chamber is utilized directly at the cylinder to fill the complementary chamber. The corresponding pump volumetric flow can be dispensed with or made available to supply parallel actions. The combustion engine can thus be downsized actively with no loss in performance.

The low-pulsation design of the new AP212 external gear pump immediately reduces both power unit noise emissions and vibrations in the entire hydraulic systems.

ECOdraulics is the guiding force in component design, in system development, and in production. Bucher Hydraulics also complies with ISO 14001 and that aids customers at all levels in developing innovative and future-oriented products.

Bucher Hydraulics is sending a clear signal to employees, to suppliers, and to customers with its ECOdraulics. This is the way of the present and the future.
