Temposonics has introduced the G-Series V GT5, a new generation of redundant position sensors designed as a direct replacement for the previous GT2 and GT3 models. The new sensor combines the established mechanical design with the latest G-Series V electronics, allowing existing systems to be upgraded without changes to their installation.

For operators using G-Series GT sensors, the transition to the GT5 is straightforward. The housing remains unchanged, while the internal electronics have been updated to the fifth-generation platform. The sensor is mechanically and electrically backward-compatible with the GT2 and GT3, so existing wiring and controller configurations can remain in place. In many applications, the changeover therefore requires little more than replacing the sensor itself.
The GT5 retains the dual or triple redundant design of its predecessors. Two or three independent measurement systems operate within the sensor, providing continued position measurement even if one measurement channel becomes unavailable. This configuration is particularly relevant in applications where sensor failure can lead to significant downtime.
One example is hydraulic steel construction, where accurate position information is required for equipment such as locks, weirs and lift bridges. These systems often operate in demanding environments and can remain in service for many years. The GT5 provides a way to bring existing installations onto the current G-Series V platform without undertaking a larger mechanical retrofit.
The sensors are available with stroke lengths of up to 3,500 mm. For applications requiring longer measurement ranges, Temposonics recommends an H3 sensor rod combined with two or three R-Series V RF5 sensors to maintain dual or triple redundancy.
Configuration and diagnostics follow the same approach used by the GH5 and GP5 sensors in the G-Series V range. Using the TempoLink® smart assistant, technicians can adjust setpoints on site and access current sensor status information. This can simplify commissioning and troubleshooting without requiring the sensor to be removed from the application.
The GT5 is based on Temposonics’ magnetostrictive measurement technology. A magnetostrictive waveguide, developed and manufactured by the company, enables non-contact position measurement without mechanical wear at the measurement point. The sensor provides an absolute position value, eliminating the need for recalibration after a power interruption or system restart.
With the GT5, the transition from the established G-Series GT range to the G-Series V platform does not require a complete system redesign. Existing installations can retain their mechanical configuration and wiring while gaining access to the newer sensor electronics and diagnostic functions.
