A large packaging market in search of innovative packaging solutions, this is the swop 2019 trade fair from November 25th to 28th in Shanghai, China. The quality and design requirements in China and Asia today are very different from those of a just few years ago. Both the packaging and the manufacturing processes need to achieve an impressive level of decoration, functionality and efficiency. With the all-electric e-mac injection moulding machine, ENGEL is showing that a combination of visual appeal, functionality and efficiency is possible.

The packaging industry in China is a robust, constantly expanding and constantly evolving market – the Shanghai World of Packaging (swop) trade fair reflects this market in the search for new, innovative products and processes. “Within the Chinese plastics industry, the production of packaging parts is an important segment with highly specific needs,” as Kurt Hell, the Vice President of ENGEL’s Packaging Division in Asia explains.

This includes raising the bar for product and packaging quality, which has steadily grown in the adolescent industrial nation of China. An aesthetically pleasing, eye-catching design, and the imaginative and practical functionality of the packaging are increasingly drawing the customer’s attention and are being given greater weight as a criterion for purchasing decisions – whether by the end consumer or the packaging company. At the same time, the (cost-) efficient production of the packaging components is becoming increasingly important. Automated processes and integrated systems solutions with a high output at the lowest possible production costs are in demand.

At swop, ENGEL is demonstrating how this balancing act between an “impressive level of decoration” and “efficiency” can succeed: a 2-chamber yoghurt cup with highly decorative IML finishing by Verstraete is being produced in a cost effective way on an all-electric ENGEL e-mac 180 injection moulding machine. Pass Card’s two-cavity hot runner mould and Wetec’s high-speed automation are both the work of companies with headquarters in Taiwan and the product of European-Asian cooperation. This cooperation with local suppliers enables ENGEL to guarantee its customers in Asia excellent cost efficiency and short lead times even for demanding applications and integrated system solutions.

The all-electric e-mac machine itself combines excellent energy efficiency and precision with a particularly compact design. It is exclusively equipped with particularly powerful servo-motors, including the ejector and nozzle movement. This not only ensures maximum precision and process stability, but also an optimum overall efficiency level. “With its performance features, the e-mac is the most cost effective solution for many packaging applications,” says Kurt Hell. The e mac series includes clamping forces between 500 and 2800 kN.
