Hwacheon, the leading South Korean manufacturer of durable and robust machine tools, is taking another step in the direction of Industry 4.0 with its AWC automatic workpiece changer. The new system, which originates from the company’s own production, is precisely matched to the manufacturer’s milling centres and enables fully automatic and operator-independent production of workpieces, even with different geometries. The new automation solution was presented on the universal 5-axis machining centre Hwacheon D2-5AX.

The patent-pending compact workpiece changer AWC 20 can accommodate up to 20 workpieces and is driven by a chain drive. For gripping on the machine, HSK-A100 holders are used as standard, on which a wide variety of fixtures for holding the workpieces can be mounted. On the side of the workpiece changer itself, there is an easily accessible set-up station that allows access to three workpiece holders. This allows holders with finished parts to be unloaded and exchanged for holders with raw parts without affecting cycle times.

The 5-axis machining centre D2-5AX features the new system integrated into the control system, which also allows workpieces with different contours to be machined in a single process. The compact machining centre can be used universally, from the production of mechanical components to tool, jig and mould making. A heavy machine bed ensures high stability – even with robust continuous operation. High precision is ensured by the use of high-quality components and spindles with oil-air lubrication and strong drives manufactured especially in our own factory. Depending on customer requirements, the D2-5AX can be supplied as either simultaneous 4+1 or simultaneous 5-axis.

The gantry-type machining centre is equipped with a 600 mm rotary table which offers an ergonomic working height of 950 mm. The basic equipment includes an adaptive feed rate adjustment, overload control in case of tool breakage and collision as well as automatic compensation of axis misalignment by means of a calibration ball and touch probe to increase productivity. Advice and service as well as a fast spare parts supply are guaranteed by the European headquarters in Bochum.
