Measurement technology being used in numerous manufacturing steps in battery production must respond to extremely high requirements in terms of accuracy, performance and robustness. Therefore, high precision distance sensors, laser scanners and sensor systems from Micro-Epsilon are the preferred choice in precise coating thickness measurements, among other things.

In the battery industry, inline inspection of production deviations during the process contributes significantly to efficiency, resource conservation and quality assurance. A decisive measurement parameter here is the thickness measurement of strip material and coated films. Distance sensors, laser scanners and sensor systems from Micro-Epsilon have proven themselves in these types of processes. Providing reliable solutions for numerous measurement tasks in battery production, they are used in many different process steps, from electrode manufacturing to assembly and forming processes.

For high precision thickness measurement, various sensor types can be used which are based on different measuring principles. Micro-Epsilon’s extensive and diverse product portfolio offers users the right measurement method with the right sensor for every type of coating and all measuring objects.

For the thickness measurement of strip and coatings, two electromagnetic capacitive sensors are arranged opposite each other. They measure electrically conductive materials from both sides. The two linear distance signals are calculated in the controller and converted to a precise thickness value. Compared to optical methods, the measurement spot is larger. This allows averaging of structures and irregularities. Due to the integrated temperature compensation, stable and precise measurement values are achieved even at high ambient temperatures.

Optical sensors performing thickness measurements are arranged opposite each other, too. Micro-Epsilon’s optoNCDT 1900 sensors operate at high resolution and can be used in both wet and dry coating processes. Due to the small light spot diameters, even the smallest of details can be reliably detected. In addition, measurements are performed with high dynamism.

The thicknessGAUGE O.EC turnkey system detects the thickness of electrode coatings. It uses the innovative combiSENSOR that combines an eddy current sensor measuring onto the guide roller, and a capacitive sensor to measure the distance from the coating surface. The exact thickness value of the electrode coating is obtained from the signal difference. The sensors are designed for reliable and precise measurements in high, fluctuating ambient temperatures.
