FRAMOS, a global custom vision solutions and component supplier, announced the availability of the new IMX548 and IMX568 5.1 Megapixel CMOS sensors from Sony. These new (1/1.8 type) global shutter sensors leveraging the PregiusSTM technology are available in monochrome or color (RGB). Both sensors are available in an identical 132 Pin LGA ceramic package with a 15mm x 12.5mm footprint. In this way, Sony Semiconductor Solutions is continuing the current trend of offering sensors with better performance in smaller packaging.

High Sensitivity for Excellent Image Results

Both sensors achieve very good image quality with high sensitivity and low dark current characteristics. These sensors offer excellent opportunities to realize a simpler camera design – for example in factory automation, Intelligent Transport System (ITS), and embedded vision applications.

The IMX548 with SLVS interface allows the sensor to achieve a frame rate up to 114 fps with 8 bits in all-pixel scan mode for demanding vision applications in factory automation. The IMX568 supports MIPI CSI-2 interface and achieves 96 fps at 8 bits.

Both sensors support multiple readout modes: all-pixel scan mode, vertical / horizontal 1/2 subsampling mode, 2×2 FD binning mode, and various ROI settings. These energy-saving sensors operate with analog 3.3 V and 2.9 V, digital 1.1 V, and interface 1.8 V quadruple power supply. Thanks to high sensitivity Backside Illuminated (BSI) pixel architecture, Sony has been able to reduce the pixel size to 2.74 µm.

Stacked Pixels in the BSI Structure

The main differences with the new stacked pixel technology are the positioning of the storage elements and the electrical wiring of the pixels. In this architecture, the pixel wiring is placed beneath the photodiodes. The pixel size can then be reduced to 2.74 µm, while maintaining sensitivity and saturation quality. A higher resolution is also achieved.

CMOS sensors using Pregius STM technology offer distortion-free, high resolution images, with a minimal package size. They are suitable for applications in manufacturing, inspection, and logistics – and achieve greater precision and faster processing speeds for smart factories and advanced automation.

Sibel Yorulmaz-Cokugur, sensor expert at FRAMOS, says: “With Pregius STM technology, sensors achieve better performance in an even smaller package. Their architecture also enables enhanced sensor functionalities on the chip.”
