Starrag has completed the modernization of its Transportation & Industrial Competence Center (TICC) in Chemnitz, Germany, with the commissioning of the Droop+Rein FOGS HD 40 130 R50 C machining center. This high-gantry machine is the central component of the internal Prisma 3 project and signals Starrag’s focus on high-precision XXL machining for very large and heavy workpieces.
The FOGS HD combines the stability of a portal machine with the dynamics of a gantry system. Hydrostatic linear guides ensure maximum rigidity and damping, allowing machining of workpieces up to 3,000 × 12,000 mm in a single clamping operation. Its pendulum operation enables two working areas for setup during machining, and dual operator stations with 24-inch touch displays ensure precise control.
Equipped with vertical and angular milling heads, the FOGS HD is ready for additional attachments like fork heads. An automatic milling head changer enables rapid tool swaps, while a 7-axis industrial robot operates the RTM tool changer with 324 HSK-A100 positions. Tool identification and rupture checking are integrated, and process control is managed by Siemens Sinumerik ONE with volumetric compensation.
The machining center incorporates an aerosol extraction system with vortex hood for employee safety and environmental protection. Energy-efficient components, dynamic power factor correction, and an energy-saving mode reduce energy consumption. Continuous monitoring records usage data to identify efficiency improvements, aligning with Starrag’s sustainable manufacturing strategy.
The 22 × 14 meter foundation provides geometric stability for machining heavy components with extreme accuracy. The FOGS HD can process all machine beds and stands of the Heckert product range and other large StarragTornos components, supporting high-precision production and showcasing state-of-the-art technology.
The FOGS HD originated in 2017 from a customer request for a machine capable of handling large, heavy workpieces in a single setup. This led to the first FOGS-HD variant as a custom solution and ultimately to a new generation of XXL machining centers.
